In the run up to the 2018 draft, Seattle was after the #1 overall pick for a new QB. Sam Darnold? Seattle offered the Cleveland Browns their 7x pro bowl QB Russell Wilson in exchange for the overall #1 pick. Wow. Seattle wan't after a running back (Saquon Barkley). Seattle was hoping to avoid paying Wilson and to swap their FQB for a rookie prospect with an even higher ceiling. Sam almost became a Seahawk!
https://www.foxnews.com/sports/seahawks-browns-trading-russell-wilson-no-1-nfl-draft Seahawks tried trading Russell Wilson to the Browns in 2018 for No. 1 overall pick in NFL Draft: report By Daniel Canova | Fox News Quarterback Russell Wilson became the highest-paid player at the position in NFL history prior to the start of the 2019 season when he signed a four-year, $140 million deal, but before the extension, the Seattle Seahawks reportedly were trying to trade away one of the best players in the league. According to NBC Sports, the Seahawks had discussions with the Cleveland Browns in 2018 regarding a trade involving Wilson and the No. 1 overall pick in that year’s NFL Draft, which the Browns ended up using on former Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Baker Mayfield. The Browns said that the trade was discussed "conceptually," according to ProFootballTalk, but they did admit that the trade "discussion did indeed happen." Wilson’s contract extension with the Seahawks included a no-trade clause, and that was reportedly implemented because of the "chatter regarding the potential trade to Cleveland," per ProFootballTalk. The Seahawks were coming off their first season without a playoff appearance in six years, and it was the first and only time Seattle missed the postseason with Wilson under center. ProFootballTalk also reported on Thursday that some "close to the situation" still believe that Wilson will eventually be traded. The Super Bowl-winning quarterback has already stated publicly that he wants to play until he's 45 years old and the Seahawks will pay him close to $40 million per year toward the end of his contract, so "some think it's just a matter of time" before the Seahawks eventually move on. Wilson has had so much success with the Seahawks over his nine-year NFL career. Wilson, a seven-time Pro Bowler who has at least 30 touchdown passes in four of his last five seasons, is a yearly contender for NFL MVP, and he’s never missed a start, which proves that he’s one of the most durable and productive players in the league.
Interesting. Is there any reliable report on which QB they were targeting? Was it actually Darnold, or was it one of the other guys, maybe even Lamar? This is the kind of bold thinking that good teams engage in, but of course they're good teams becuse they know how to evalaute talent and develop it, and have good coaching, so they can usually make something bold work out. I wonder if anyone here would've taken that deal if the Seahawks offered it for their 3rd pick then?
We'll probably never know for certain which QB they wanted, all we know is Sam Darnold was at the top of the 2018 draft on most draft cards. I'd love to know for sure!
Had to be one of the top 3. Mayfield, Darnold, or Allen. They had a chance at Jackson and took Rashard Penny instead. Now way that happens if they wanted Lamar. That said I doubt it was Allen as his accuracy was and still is horrible. My guess would be Mayfield or Darnold. I wouldn't bet against Mayfield, they aren't afraid of height.
Would have been funny if they did the deal...Seattle takes Sam and the the Browns, thinking they were out of the QB hunt take some scrub named Lamar at the end of the 1st round!
Probably right, but when the trade didn't happen and they still had Russell, they might not have wanted a QB controversy, and then having to trade one of them.
They could have taken Jackson and immediately traded Wilson for 2 first rounders and more. They were not after Jackson.
I have to imagine it was Darnold, what with Pete Carroll’s USC connection and the west coast proximity. Plus Darnold was considered a safer choice than Mayfield generally, and you have to be damn sure about your new guy to give up Wilson.
If it was Darnold the Seahawks wanted, then why didn’t they offer the Jets a deal when he was still on the board at number 3? Mayfield, then Barkley were taken at one and two. If they wanted to get Sam, they certainly had that option still,
Really? Russell Wilson could be traded before the end of his career because he wants to play until he's 45? It only happened to that GOAT guy in New England in the last 2 months. Well no shit it could happen. Such groundbreaking non-news. In other non-news Terry Fucking Bradway wanted Russell Wilson in the 3rd round.
Trey Wingo just very confidently said on his morning show that Seattle wanted Drew Lock in the 2019. He had multiple sources confirm this
No way they wanted Jackson. They picked before Jackson was taken and took Rashard Penny. They could have traded Wilson for Multiple picks instead of trying to grab a high one. Probably would have gotten a slew of picks and taken Jackson at the spot they had. It was Mayfield or Darnold they wanted.
I don't totally believe this. Maybe they joked about it. I don't believe Seattle would give up Russell Wilson, even for Darnold.
Well, they have completely dismantled their team because they had to pay Wilson. And while Wilson is still good he isn't getting them back to the superbowl
It still could happen. Yesterday PFT said Wilson could be traded around 2021 or 2022 when he'll be 31. That's around the same time the Jets have to make a big decision on Darnold.
Who knows they didn't? Maybe Mac didn't want to take on a $40M/yr contract with Sam sitting there at 3. Mac already traded his 2nd round picks to move up. When the Giants took Barkley, it was ON and nothing was going to change that.
Keep in mind Seattle won it all with a rookie QB. And now Russell was demanding to become the highest paid player in NFL history. It may have been tempting to do it again with a rookie QB (and an extra $40M/yr for good players!). It was the model that worked for them.
Well Seattle was going after either Darnold or Baker. The point of posting this was "We finally have a good QB that other teams really wanted!!!" Let's all hope going forward the Jets join the teams at the top with a FQB under center.
