Loved McCarver when I was watching baseball. The rare really smart announcer who was also very personable. He was like the John Madden of MLB.

    RIP dude.

He was great at his job but I never cared for him when he was in the booth for Yankee playoff games. He always came across as biased to me. In any event, RIP.

He was a fine ballplayer, and I definitely learned a lot about baseball listening to him, and the way he and Ralph Kiner played off each other was great. He was an excellent color man, but I also have to admit that by the time he left the Mets' booth I wasn't sorry to see him go. RIP.

Edited to add: I always thought his best story was about the time he went out to the mound to talk to Bob Gibson, who dismissed him, saying "The only thing you know about pitching is that you can't hit it."

Always liked him. Never understood the violent reactions.
