Nobody heard of any man to walk on the moon except Neil Armstrong.

That's what happens when you undertake a sideshow space race to try to beat an international rival to the spot. It's why the Moon program died so quickly after we got there and why Mars wasn't on the radar until recently.

We should have been in space, not near orbital but planetary approaches, some of them manned for the last 40+ years. Instead we built the shuttle, declared victory and now we're relying on the Russians among others to deliver toilet paper to the International Space Station with no unclassified governmental ability to get to orbital resources at this point.

In the long run nobody cares who was first. They care about who had the staying power to actually devote resources to maintaining the capability.

And of course, RIP Gene Cernan - you did things most of us just dream of doing.

And for every Jets coach in the team's history with a winning record six guys have walked on the moon!

You kidding? . "Buzz" Aldrin?? . Ol' Buzz is a household name--or should be--for any red-blooded American boy not to mention Alan Sheppard who was a real deal space pioneer during the Mercury program days.

And like it or not (decades later) the political/space zeitgeist of the times was like 1980's "Miracle on Ice" x10,000,000. When Kennedy declared that we were going to put a man on the moon "by the end of the decade" (read: damn the costs) no one dared call him on it.

Danny asks Mr Halloran "What is in MOON 237?" And Halloran answers, "Nothin." Go watch the movie again. He clearly says MOON 237. Also Danny's bigwheel ride is the Apollo missions. Bare floor is the rocket noise, carpeted is when they go to space. Danny's bigwheel, before the scene we see here, touches carpet 10 times before this scene (Apollo 11.) On the 10th time. Danny passes 237, goes back. Jiggles the handle. But doesn't go in. Apollo 10 did exactly that. It was a dress rehearsal. Then this scene shows Apollo 11. Coincidence? Maybe.
