Will he make it to 17? He seems like the perfect downhill player for Rex Ryan. I would love to see him and Harris together behind Jenkins. Thoughts?
Ryan said something about this Rey at the combine. If we dont' get scott or Lewis, I can see this kid being taken.
I hope not. He's undisciplined, best suited to play OLB in a 4-3 where he can just run wild. A 3-4 requires defined roles for each linebacker, and he a) can't cover at all and b) isn't fast enough to rush off the edge. Complete opposite of James Laurinaitis, but an equally bad pick.
I could see it, but strongly think we will adress ILB in free agency. Maualuga is a thumper and has the skills/size to play in the 3-4. Not overly fluid in pass coverage but should be an upgrade over barton in that respect. As Mick said, if we fail on both Scott and Lweis its not unthinkable. I would rather see the pick used on Sean Smith from Utah if we go defense. Very good size for a CB or Safty. His versatility will help a ton in the type of defense Rex will run. Good coverage skills for a guy his size. I would like to see him as our pick at 17 if we go D.
He would not need ot be an edge rusher in our D. He's an inside linebacker. I don't see at all why he would be moved outside in a 4-3. His biggest problem inside in the 3-4 is his tendancy to overpursue. My Biggest knock against him is his maturity issues with the off field incidents and the little dance he did behind Erin Andrews that got caught on camra. I would be concerned about spending a high pick on a guy who cannot stay out of trouble before he has millions to blow.
I don't like Maualuga at all, Harpua. I think he's a headhunter who plays far too aggressive. His speed is sub par, he can't cover, and he doesn't keep to his gaps. I don't see him being a productive NFL player at all. To me, he's a defensive version of Tebow: great college player, not so great NFLer.
The more I watch Maualuga, the more he looks like a two-down linebacker. I still like him a lot, but he's not what this team needs. His coverage skills are lacking, but he's very coach-able.
It's been said often, but since we just cut two ILBs and we're linked heavily to Lewis and Scott, it looks like we're getting one of those guys. However, I had him going to Denver at #12. And if not there than San Diego would probably take him at #16. So even if we didn't sign a FA ILB for some reason, I don't think he would be around anyway. There's certainly a chance he's there, but IMO he'll go higher.
We already have a downhill player in David Harris, what we need is someone who can cover like Bart Scott or Brian Cushing.
Actually Cushing isn't very good in coverage... Bart Scott looks like the ILB we're missing and it looks like there's a nice chance he'll be a Jet.
i'm not too impressed on malaluga. I only saw him play against Penn State in the Rose Bowl and he spent most of that game on the ground.
Brian Cushing is a animal would love to have him here... he is a hard worker and would help out d out
I agree with the bold point. I disagreee with his speed being Subpar though. He could learn to tackle better and would have to maintain his responsibiltys in the 34. That said, its easier to reign in a wild player with passion then light a fire under someone who just does not care enough. It that respect Maualuga seems to be the Anti Gholston. He has talent. I'm not sold that we need him in round one, but not as against him as you are. Hopefully free agency clears up the need for ILB to be adressed.
The only way he would work there is if it was in a jim johnson type scheme, he's a terrible fit outside in any other scheme
would love to have Maualuga but realistically he wont be there so its between Cushing and Laurinatis either one would do... we should solidify the middle of the d
