    http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap30...ex-ryan-confirms-geno-smith-will-start-week-1

This is the biggest surprise of the year, I mean could anybody have guessed this was going to happen after all that was said and all the reps he was given, I was just so surprised that he was given the starting job, Its the most shocking turn of events since- okay I'll stop.

Anyway, Geno wins the QB competition that barely was one, which is fine because I think I can objectively say he has looked good in his outings, and has built off of his rookie campaign in a positive way.

Wether or not he'll keep his job this year and beyond will depend on how well he can protect the football among other factors, I'm by no means declaring him the teams savior and sure-fire franchise QB, but signs seems to be pointing upward.

there have been other topics about the guy, but I thought here would be a good place to discuss what we all expect from him this year, give some stat predictions, and just plain discuss the current status of the Era of Eugene. (Can I make that catch on?)

I think we can expect 19-20 TD's through the air, 3,850 yards passing, 10 picks, 8 TD's on the ground, 425 rushing yards and two fumbles. Basically I believe his TO's are cut in half and he throws for just under 4k yards.

THE FRONT OFFICE IS SO RACIST, THE ONLY REASON VICK ISNT THE STARTER IS BECAUSE HE IS BLACK!

I'll never understand Jets fans. Rex was asked if Geno is week 1 starter and he finally made it official.

Rex is not naming anyone starter and there are threads that he MUST name NOW!!!
Rex names one -- sarcastic remarks all over the place. I really don't get what some of you expect him to do.

By the way, ESPN is now bashing Rex for not naming Geno starter for the whole season, just for one game. So someone needs to quickly make new thread about naming a starter QB for the SEASON NOW!!!!

Thought they found him when they blew up the old Meadowlands Stadium. Heard he was under the Giants endzone. That why the sod sucked so much..

If anyone is surprised by the ho hum reaction to Geno being announced as the week 1 starter, its because we all KNEW Geno was going to be the week 1 starter back in week 1 of TC. Only the CS and the GM played the game. Not even Vick brought into that bullshit. Unless Geno gets hurt, he's gonna be the starter for the season too. This is why listening to what Rex and Idzik say sometimes amounts to a trip thru Disneyland. They actually expect people to believe their words instead of their lying eyes.

Perhaps the FO/CS might wanna start treating their fans like adults instead of children, we might start believing the pressers and may actually be surprised one day with an announcement.

I dunno about 4K yds thru the air. Not with our running game and 2 headed Wr attack. I see more of a balance if not a return to a run oriented system which will limit Geno's TO's quite a bit. This is still a Rex Ryan team and will always have a run first philosphy on offense. Until we get better at the Wr position, I think this is a wise course of action. We have Decker and Kerley and several other jags. Not quite good enough to become a pass first offense. Not yet anyways.

for some reason I thought he got more passing yards than he actually did last year… I was adding another few hundred on top of what I thought that number was. I'll trim that down to 3400 or so, he passes that mark if he doesn't shit the bed the way he did mid season, or cuts his TO's down.

4k might be too high but he threw for 3k last year and I think the screen game mught ve gokd for an extra 500.so expecting around 3750 isn't too outlandish,no?

Again, with our hydra headed running attack, I don't see a real need for Geno to pass as much as last season unless we find ourselves behind in games thanks to our CB of last resort. I do see the OLine as vastly improved in the run game but again, Geno did have a few times when his legs saved a sack. I'm still not sold on Winters although I do like his feistiness. He needs to learn how to be legally dirty instead of getting flagged so much. On offense, I see a ball control style predicated on the run game, not the passing game so, 3.5K sounds pretty good as long as it doesn't come with double digit INT's.

I don't think it was about the fans or anybody else, I think it was just dangling a carrot in front of Smiths face to make him want it more. "We're not calling you the starter, you gotta earn that name, thats your test and if you flunk we have another guy here ready to take it from you."

Thats not to say they didn't think he had the drive to improve on his own, just that they weren't prepared to get THAT complacent with him, which apparently meant making no declarative statements to the public. God forbid they call him the starter before camp and then he comes in inferior to Vick.

I get that Smith had to earn the position however, if you're gonna have a "competition", don't make it so transparent that even a blind man could see who was going to win it. When asked about it, didn't Idzik say something to the effect of "these things have an ebb and flow". Certainly didn't work out like that did it. The "Competition" was fixed for Smith to win. It was Smith's job to lose all along and not Vick's job to win. Huge difference there. I have a gut feeling that they told Vick coming in that they wanted him to back up and mentor Smith in MM's system. Implicit in that is that Geno is our guy and if you can accept that, welcome to the Jets. Kinda makes sense when you consider that Vick only came in for a one year deal. If Vick wants to start, playing to good mentor role here was a master stroke as now he can move on and catch on with another team and really compete for a starting job unlike say, Sanchez.

Again, treat your fanbase as if they have some intelligence. If you say there's a competition, have a competition. Anything like what we just witnessed this TC is an insult to Jet Fans everywhere and starts to speak to the credibility of this FO.

If Geno continues his sharp play, I see us more as a balanced 50-50 run / pass team.

4000 yards is possible. I think Geno is going to toss 20+ TDs this season.
