Against THAT offense, in THAT enviornment, after what we did in January? You know they want to bury us, and with all the heat coming down on our offense after the Raven debacle, do we really need to put them on the field down 7-0 two minutes into the game? If you read my posts you can see I'm one of the more positive fans on here but I think that first drive has disaster written all over it. for ONCE can't we take the damn ball and try to let our offense build a little confidence and get into a good vibe, and a good rythym against a bad defense?? Probably not ... so we should all prepare for climbing uphill on Sunday.
The Ravens debacle was not the Defenses fault. It was the offense. We lost 10-3 taking out the returns. Only the opening drive led to a TD.
I know that. my post is not a shot at the defense. Im just talking about the first drive of the game. I'm talking about putting the offense in a good place instead of the very real possibility of playing from behind right from the start.
Ryan wants to take control of the game early. On this Jets squad that means sending the defense out to negate the opponent's first possession and setup good field position for the offense. If the clock was a continual entity throughout the game then there'd be a real price to pay for doing this: the extra possession you grant the opponent at the beginning of the game, since possession of the football is the most important factor in the NFL. However given that the first half and the second half are entirely separate entities with each team gaining possession at the beginning of play in one or the other it's really a wash. Ryan wants to lead with his better unit and there is no penalty for doing so. The only thing that is affected by the decision is that the Jets will score less in the first quarter and more in the third.
I actually don't mind deferring in this game if we get the opportunity. I think it will give us an idea on how they want to attack us but giving us the ball in the 2nd half.
I get it ... and I like it as a philosophy in most games. But not this one. we need to give our offense every opportunity to play from in front. especially if Rex is serious about being ground and pound again. I think out D will play well enough as they get into the flow of the game. but on that first drive I give Brady about an 80 percent chance of scoring against us.

i usually love kicking the ball off first and setting the tone with the D, but Brady almost always starts out strong... if they get the ball first were almost automatically going to be down by at least 3... lets play with a lead for once and start with our O that needs to prove themselves against a lack-luster D... ELECT TO RECEIVE! we always suck in the 3rd quarter anyway lol
Belichick normally defers. So if the Pats win the coin toss, the Jets will probably get the ball. (Course, now that I posted that, he'll prove me wrong.)
As a coach with a good defense, I would always choose to receive to start the 2nd half. If you scored right before the half, it gives you a chance to put up some big unanswered points. If the other team scored before the half, it gives you a chance to immediately gain back some ground.
I don't think we should put more pressure on the offense than they already have. Defer. Stop the Pats first drive. Then settle into a ball control offense.
I always prefer to get the ball to begin the 2nd half but I see the point of the original post. I don't think it would be a bad idea to receive if we win the toss. If we receive and get points that could be a huge confidence boost.
Of course, you have to win the coin toss to have any say in the matter. I read Rex defers all the time. In 4 games, how many times has he won the toss?
That's exactly the point I'm making. That's why you give the offense the ball first against a crappy defense and at least let them get a couple of first downs. Why take the chance (the VERY GOOD chance) of being down 7-0 before they even get on the field? I can see it now ... 8 plays, 80 yards ... 7-0 Pats. There's Sanchez under center on our 15 yard line with the crowd going nuts, Sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. Why play with fire?
Right now our offense is the weakest unit, so I'd rather have the defense stop the Pats on their first drive to generate some momentum.
I don't think the defense is playing well enough to stop the Patriots on their first drive, right now. If Rex is trying to prove that the "ground and pound" is back, then let's take the ball and pound it down their throats.
The offense responded pretty well last time they were given the chance to have the ball first. Rex challenged them to score in the 1st quarter, and they did. Why not give the offense some confidence and elect to receive. I believe we can move the ball against New England's defense, especially if we have a good gameplan for that initial drive. Why not march down the field, go up 7-0 on the Pats, and control the game from there?
