"Yes, a coach can change the atmosphere, and coach Ryan has done it,'' said Darrelle Revis, a third-year Jet who just emerged from the two-year funk of the Eric Mangini Era. "I tell you, with Mangini, it wasn't good here. Everybody had mixed feelings about him and as a team, you can't go far like that.'' Very telling about the shadiness of Mangini's ways in contrast to the open, free wheeling fun style that Rex brings. Thanks to ownership for making the change and giving players and fans something to hope for!
per newsday... Revis acknowledged that under Mangini, the Jets seemed to be moving in the right direction, especially after back-to-back wins over New England and then-unbeaten Tennessee gave them an 8-3 record in November of 2008. "But then it just started slipping, and when it slipped, we couldn't get it back, and I think [Mangini] was one of the reasons,'' Revis said. "There's things you just gotta ease up on and he just couldn't ease up. I mean, we're men, we're not boys, and I think Mangini kinda ran it like a high school team.'' By contrast, Revis said, Ryan trusts his players. In return, they trust him back.
Wow. When players criticize a coach, they usually don't name him specifically like that. Kind of surprising Revis was so direct.
Add that to Schotty saying he was happier this year than he has been in years and you understand how miserable Mangini made everybody feel.
I'm surprised. Revis usually doesn't say shit. Good for him. Mangina won't be a HC in the NFL after next season.
I think it was a good thing to have Mangini... you need a guy like that to kick players in the ovaries after a 4-12 season. He doesn't have problems turning around franchises... he has a problem in treating players like man when they finally get their act toghether... he keeps treating them like kids. That's when you fire him and get a coach like Ryan who maybe would be too soft to turn around a franchise but if given a potentially succesfull team can deliver. I think if Mangini hadn't been the Jets coach Rex wouldn't be as loved... they would have loved him for sure but not as much.
Mangini demonstrated the same poor leadership traits many of us see w/weak managers in business. Lack of confidence coupled with the need to manipulate people and situations to achieve short term political advantages but which are highly detrimental to the organization as a whole.
I think Revis' point is that they needed that kinda of coach, back in high school. Mangini is way over his head as a head coach in the NFL. I've been blathering on to my friends and co-workers about how much I love Rex. I wonder how much of that is tied to the difference between the two coaches.
Yeah, was really surprised to read this. I always thought Revis was a Mangini guy because of how hard he is known to practice and study film. Interesting stuff, though.
I think at this point Revis could say what eer the hell he wants about anyone and is not going to get much disagreement. When your one of th best in the league at what you do it gives your the freedom to speak your mind and have people listen.
Mangini is a very smart man. Hell, even Rex has admitted several mistakes, and has taken steps to 'get better'. If Mangini (the same Mangini that led us to a victory over the Patriots and the 10-0 Titans) finds a way to 'loosen up a fucking bit' and connect with his players as humans, he will be a great coach. Combine his football smarts with a team that loves him and, well, you just may have another rex ryan!
Highly doubtful. There is no such thing as going to the personality store and buying a new personality. Mangini couldn't be Rex even if he went to the actors studio and studied there for 2 years and mimicked everything he does. Charisma is an inherited, intangible quality that you're born with or your not.
