    Vikings | Cottrell to retire
    Tue, 14 Feb 2006 05:52:07 -0800

Don Seeholzer, of the Pioneer Press, reports former Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell revealed Monday, Feb. 13, that he has filed retirement papers with the NFL. "I don't want to retire," Cottrell, 58, said. "I'm being forced into retirement." Cottrell has been unable to land a job with an NFL team, despite 10 head coaching changes. "It's been a bizarre year," Cottrell said. "All these openings but no jobs. I've called some people and it's the same old story. 'We'll let you know if anything opens up.'"

Why does he act like he's owed something? He hasn't had that much success in his career.

He should swallow his pride and accept a position coaching job.

Hackett made the playoffs three of the four years he coached the Jets. Cottrell two out of three and Edwards three out of five. Schottenheimer, Mangini and Sutton won't smell the playoffs for the next three years, if they last that long.

Yeah that's pretty bad, I never liked Teddy C, just wasn't agressive enough.

Who should we get to replace him? I heard Herm has a good relationship with Mike Heimerdinger, the current OC on the Titans. I think he'd be a great guy to bring in, Chad could excell throwing to Moss and McCareins in a shotgun offense, and Dinger and McCareins have a good relationship. I think he'd be a major upgrade over Hackett. Thoughts?

Maybe some smart team will let the first 6 weeks of the 2006 season pass, and then hire Cottrell. His D always took September and half of Oct to get a clue.

I kinda feel bad for Teddy...a few years back he came this close to an HC job with the 49ers and now he can't even get a job.

I missed your illogical ramblings while TTG was down.

First. EVERY HC, OC, DC, GM had to start somewhere. They all had first years and MANY HOF HCs were under 40 when they began.

Second. Saying they won't smell the playoffs for the next three years is as bad as people saying they are going to bring us to the SB next year. NO ONE KNOWS. You know why? BECAUSE THEY HAVE NOT DONE ANYTHING YET.

I feel bad for big Ted,while i don't think he was very good it's still a shame to see a guy retire because he can't get work.Although i will feel less sympathetic if it's only DC jobs he isn't getting.

What an amazing story. Teddy construes a lack of job offers as being "forced into retirement." :)

Sometimes the business of football is like working in Bizarro World.

I'm sure he could've taken a lesser assistant position until something opened up but he just HAD to be a DC or HC. So know all he can do now is work as some football analyst at a local tv station.... :)
