ongtime GM John Schuerholz is reportedly stepping down after 17 seasons with the Atlanta Braves. According to various media reports, Schuerholz is handing over the reins to top assistant Frank Wren. Since 1991, Schuerholz's Atlanta teams compiled a 1,594-1,092 record. The nearly 1,600 wins was the most in the majors during that span. His Braves teams reached the postseason in 14 of 17 seasons. Schuerholz, who was the longest tenured general manager in the major leagues, took over as GM in 1990 and the Braves won 14 straight division titles before struggling the past two seasons. Atlanta won just one World Series, in 1995, despite those 14 straight trips to the playoffs. Schuerholz also won a World Series ring with Kansas City in 1985 and has been a GM for 26 years. Braves manager Bobby Cox, who has said he will be back for at least one more year in the dugout, will be doing so with a new boss. Wren was an assistant GM for the Braves for seven seasons. Prior to that, he was the general manager for the Baltimore Orioles in 1999. He was also an assistant GM with the Florida Marlins for eight seasons. The Braves said they have a major announcement scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET. ------- Wow. Wouldn't be surprised if Cox decided to pack his bags now.
Its not that big of a deal - the braves want to revamp their organization, and this is just another step. They want to move in a new direction.
It has nothing to do with the Braves and everything to do with Schuerholz. Makes you think he knows things won't be very pretty in Atlanta anytime soon.
He is the answer to a trivia question, he is the only GM to win a World Series in both the American (KC 1985) and National (Atlanta 95). As a Met fan I wish they'd get rid of Omar and bring in him. He'd have infinite resources in New York while Atlanta being a big city is low revenue based on the fact that even when they're good nobody shows up to Turner Field.
Nobody shows up when they are bad either..I spent 6 years in Atlanta starting in 1990. That year was the year they first became good after the AS break. Prior to the break they were averaging under 1000 (yes, 1000) per game. Same with the NFL. A few years ago when they hosted the NFC championship game they had 20,000 unsold seats. If you aren't NCAA football or NASCAR don't expect anybody to show up in Atlanta.
Hmm..Steinbrenner said earlier this year that Cashman was on a big hook for this season too...I wonder.....
It's the most undeserving major league city I've ever seen. They don't deserve any team in that city but hey you gotta have an NHL Franchise in Atlanta right? Your right I dated a girl from Atlanta and she cared more about the Bulldogs than the Falcons, Braves or Hawks.
I believe this myth was mentioned and exposed earlier on the board. The Falcons have never hosted the NFC championship game - the game against the Vikings in 1998 was in Minneapolis, and the game against the Eagles in 2004 was in Philadelphia. The only two playoff games they hosted in the last 25 years both had over 70,000 people attending, within about 1000 of capacity of the Georgia Dome.
