With stud cornerback Darrelle Revis glued to him all day, Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Reggie Wayne had just one pass thrown his way in the Colts' 17-16 loss to the Jets.
After the game, Wayne told Mike Chappell of the Indy Star that he wasn't happy about it.
"It's bull. It's bull, man. [...] I give everything I've got no matter what. Every day, I give it everything. And ... one ball, that's all."
"I shouldn't have even suited up. [...]*I should have watched the game like everybody else. I was irrelevant."
Wayne didn't get specific on exactly who was responsible for all the "bull," but with the Colts, there's just one guy who decides where the football goes. His name is Peyton Manning. Here's how he explained throwing Wayne's way just once (via AP):
“Reggie Wayne has had an unbelievable year,” Manning said. “There’s no question he was a big focus of their defense. It was just a matter of throwing to the guy that was open on each progression, depending on what the coverage was.”
So, is Reggie Wayne's complaint valid? Should he have seen more footballs on Saturday night?
I'll say this: When it comes to deciding if a man is open or not, and if he is indeed the best possible target on a pass play, I'll take Peyton Manning's word for it. If he decided it was best to only go to Reggie Wayne one time, I don't think anyone's in a position to tell him he's wrong. He's pretty good at making those decisions.
Not that I blame Wayne for being frustrated, either. A narrow playoff loss is hard to swallow for anyone. He's a fierce competitor and a superstar in the league. He's not without an ego. Everyone wants the football. Everyone wants to feel like they're being useful, and they want to do everything humanly possible to help the team win. Frustration is natural.
He's overstating when he's saying he was irrelevant, too. Occupying Darrelle Revis for the entire game isn't nothing. If Wayne's not doing that, there's no way Pierre Garcon is lighting up Antonio Cromartie for 112 yards and a touchdown.
Wayne will get past this. He and Manning have been making touchdowns for a long time now, and they'll go right back to doing the same thing next season.

If I was Reggie Wayne I would be upset at Revis for being so good.

Wayne has a very good reason to be unhappy. It's the playoffs, you find a way to get your best receiver the ball. Doesn't matter who is on him, you find a way!

entire thread on this already =/

Anyway, fuck Wayne. Manning is going for the open receiver no matter who it is & no Colt on the field has anyone like Revis defending him. If the D or special teams comes through in the 2nd half, they win the game & nobody gives a damn about Wayne not getting passes.

Out of all people in NFL, nobody knows what Wayne is capable of more than Manning so the fact that he didn't get the ball means either he couldn't get himself open or Manning felt he's not worth the risk.

Love the suggestion that Revis is so good a top receiver should be happy he's 'keeping him occupied' so he can't go shut down someone else!

Wayne has a "very good reason of being unhappy"? Are you kidding me? It's obvious that you have no idea of just how special Revis really is. He's hands down, the greatest shut down corner since Sanders during his prime years with the Falcons, 49ers & Cowboys. No question about it.

Great WR's such as Wayne getting completely eliminated from the game is nothing new. Did you not watch #24 in action last year? Obviously not. The ways Revis shut down WR's such as A.Johnson, V.Jackson, S.Smith, R.Wayne (2x), R.Moss (2x), T.Owens (2x), C.Ocho (2x), R.White & M.Colston just goes to show how great Revis really is.

Manning is an all time great. Manning made Wayne, it's not the other way around; just remember that. No one runs an offense like #18, not even Brady. If your open; Manning will find you. Thats the bottom line.

You know you're good when a hall of fame bound qb only throws your way only once during the entire game. He looked waynes way a bunch of times, there was just nothing there.

Revis is incredible but they also didn't even really try that hard to get Wayne open-they just kept Wayne alone in the X position almost the entire game. He wasn't in motion, he wasn't in the backfield, he wasn't in a double stack, he never had a TE outside of him, they didn't really run picks for him, etc.

A bit unrelated but I was arguing with a Colts fan last week about how Revis shutdown Reggie last year. Went on and on for a little while until he said, "Revis and Reggie negated each other".

Exactly you fuckin moron, that's what Revis does. lol
