ASHBURN, Va. (AP) -- The Washington Redskins have selected Kentucky defensive end Jeremy Jarmon in the third round of the NFL supplemental draft. The Redskins will give up their third-round pick in the 2010 NFL draft. Jarmon acknowledged in May he had been declared ineligible for his senior season by the NCAA because he tested positive for a banned substance. He said the result came from a dietary supplement. The Redskins say he's the first player they've ever taken in a supplemental draft. I guess nobody else was picked..
I don't know how the supplemental draft works. So the Skins give up their third in next year's draft for taking someone in the third in the supplemental... does that mean you give up a 2nd for taking a supplemental 2nd, etc.? Doesn't sound like a logical move to me. Or was this guy a special scenario?
Jarmon's a very good player. If he entered the 2009 draft, he most likely would've been drafted in the second or third round. JJ was one of the better defensive linemen in the SEC.
The supplemental draft works like that but there are other parts to it, too: Teams don't go in order for each round saying "nah" until someone picks a player. The teams all submit a player's name and the highest pick they would use on him. The team with the highest pick offered for a player gets that player for that pick in the next year's draft. For all we know, every team in the NFL could have offered a 4th round pick for Jarmon and the 'Skins got him because they offered a 3rd. It's all done in secret.
