Dillon cut loose, may Jet off to NY
By John Tomase / Patriots Notebook / Boston Herald Sports Writer

    Saturday, March 3, 2007 - Updated: 07:58 AM EST

The Patriots [team stats] officially said goodbye to Corey Dillon [stats] yesterday. The team granted the veteran running back his release, saving roughly $2.5 million against the salary cap and freeing him to seek a new job. He may not go far - sources indicated last night that the Jets are expected to have interest in the bruising back.

?On behalf of the New England Patriots [team stats] organization, we respect and appreciate Corey Dillon?s significant contributions to our team,? coach Bill Belichick said in a statement. ?Those contributions extend beyond his individual on-field achievements and his integral role in a championship season. They also include three years of veteran leadership and positive relationships throughout the team.?

Dillon, who turns 33 in October, said last week that he planned to retire before recanting. He?s expected to seek one last payday and believes he can be a featured back.He could have that opportunity in New York, where the Jets struggled to mount a ground attack with Curtis Martin sidelined all year. The Jets ranked 20th in rushing and were led by rookie Leon Washington [stats], who totaled 650 yards.Dillon spent three years with the Pats after being acquired from the Bengals for a second-round pick in the 2004 draft. He won a Super Bowl and rushed for a franchise-record 1,635 yards in 2004. The 10-year veteran ranks 14th on the NFL?s all-time rushing list with 11,241 yards.

I'm with you. We don;t need a RB in the twilight of his career. It will do nothing for us except waste money and time.

If he is fine with a two-back system, he would be the perfect compliment to Leon. I don't think the Jets are dumb enough to give him a huge deal and promise him the feature back role. So, as long as we bring him in on our terms, I say go for it.

NO WAY does Tangini give 33 year old Dillon the starting RB job when Michael Turner is on the market, and there is the possibility of obtaining Clinton Portis from the Redskins without giving up Vilma, now that the Skins have London Fletcher. I have faith that Tannenbaum won't make a retarded decision.

Give him a 1 or 2 year deal only if we come up empty in the draft. Dillon is a short-term solution at best. I would much prefer a young, strong RB who will grow with the Jets and be around for a long time. With Dillon, we will be having the same debate about a RB next off-season.

The Jets need to get a rb through the draft. We have 2 second round picks. Use one on a young rb who can contribute this year and many years to come.

Dillon, Henry, Brown, Green etc should not be signed. they are all either washed up or soon to be washed up.

If we sign one of thses bums I will be very disappointed.
