About a year ago, Brett Ratliff was a lot of people's darling on these boards, which many others thought was a bit foolish, since his stats were compiled against second half preseason opponents. I'd say it was about 50/50 here whether or not he was better for us than Clemens.

I wondered about him this morning and looked up his stats from this summer.

    8/15 7 of 13 53 yards, 0 TD's 2 picks, 3 sacks.
    8/22 1 of 4 25 yards, 0 TD's 0 picks, 2 sacks.
    8/29 Didn't play
    9/03 8 of 20, 71 yards, 1 TD, 1 pick, 1 sack

Totals 16 of 37, 162 yards, one TD, 3 interceptions, sacked 6 times.

I don't think anyone in Cleveland is calling for Ratty to take over for Quinn or Anderson. Looks to me like Clowney made Ratliff, not the other way around. I don't miss him, do you?

Clowney makes every backup QB look good, even Clemens. OP is on the money.

This is why these forums are almost unreadable in the preseason...

Ratliff is the term used to describe NFL players who have some success in preseason games but never see regular season action. Jets fans from the 1990s may remember a wide receiver from Washington named Mario Bailey. He was the Jets best Ratliffer of that particular decade.

Clowney made Ainge look pretty good too. Now people want Ainge to be the backup ab ahead of Clemens. I just hope that Clowney can make Sanchez look good too.

Two words: Cleveland Browns; adding a 3rd: Backups.

Clowney is a great receiver against 2's and 3's.

Yeah, but now we have a #4 QB. People will be calling for O'Connell to start by week 8.

I might get in on that action now so I look like an early adopter.

"O'Connell is by far the most accomplished of the Jets QB options and should start" (09/07/09)

Of course something should be said about how QBs develop under HC Mangini.

There is always a group that thinks the #3 is the best guy on the roster. Ainge does seem to have developed into a servicable #3 guy, but he's not good enough to start in this league. If we get to the point where we need the #3 guy (and we've been there before, not too long ago), at least I know we have a guy who isn't totally lost. All that said, he IS the #3 guy for a reason.

Hey... Mangini was a genius! BTW that means nothing is ever his fault (Ghost_ton). Ratliff never got as much preseason playing time as Ainge and never looked as good. Since alot of you prefer a jinxed, washed up Clemens over Ainge, I pray if you get your wish that it happens this year so we can trade down out of the really high draft spot for depth.

Look bad? He probably won't even suit up. I figure that if we keep him, he's QBing the show team for at least half the season.

He could have been our starter...with the help of Head Coach Donnie Henderson...
