From the homesite. Had that penalty on the KO this past weekend, I believe. I guess Mangini has seen enough and may be trying to send some messages... Rashad Washington Waived Published: 11-06-07 Pr-mic-small By Jets PR Department Regular Contributor change font email article The New York Jets have waived safety Rashad Washington. The announcement was made by Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum. Washington (6'1", 217) was selected by the Jets in the seventh round (236th overall) of the 2004 NFL Draft out of Kansas State. In four seasons, he played in 48 games and tallied 69 special teams tackles, 22 defensive tackles, 1.5 sacks and one pass defensed. He recorded 10 special teams tackles in nine games this season.
Didn't he have two penalties Sunday? I know after the one I'm sure you're thinking of, I said to myself "He's gone this week".
Good, I never thought Washington was all that good. He was an average ST player and subpar safety. And he was the odd man out with Rhodes, Elam, Eric Smith, and Erik Coleman. And you're right Mangini might be trying to shake things up even more. About time heads started to roll for shitty play.
The first penalty against him for blocking in the back was a horrible. call. They never showed the replay on his holding penalty.
Mangini looked pisses after the first one. This isn't really a big surprise, but he sure didn't wait too long. I wish he'd use that same urgency when addressing other issues with this team.
Mangini looked very pissed after the second one. He took his headset off and screamed at somebody on the sidelines. Obviously that was Washington coming back after the play. While it was nice to see signs of life from the genius I don't think it was a particularly wise move on his part. Scapegoating at this point in the season isn't going to help him recover a shell-shocked locker room. Rashad Washington was also the guy who muffed the onsides kick. That's 3 mistakes on special teams in one day. Most guys don't make 3 blatant mistakes in a season.
Maybe Mangini should waive himself if he wants to see the team start getting better... this is so ridiculous... When I was at Hofstra as a student, I know for a fact that our whole football team was on sauce... halfway through the season, a 3rd string lineman gets booted from the team for "failing a piss test." Exactly the same thing as in this situation... Making a sacrificial lamb of a special teams guy who had one penalty and one horrible call against him isn't going to scare any of the "big names."
But Washington wasn't particularly good either. The ONLY reason he made the team was due to his special teams play and that has fallen off considerably recently. He is not a very good safety. With Elam getting playing time, and Washington sucking up the place, this was inevitable.
I read an article this morning that said he's had 4 ST penalties in the last three games. That doesn't help.
sucks for Washington, but its about time Mangini starts sending messages. you can't cut everybody, but at the same time its important to piss people off so they know a season like this is not acceptable. look for more things like this in the coming weeks
I know you hate Mangini at this point, but do you disagree with the decision? Washington has been a fringe player on this team for years, he makes a few dumb mistakes, and he gets cut finally. No issue with this move whatsoever. I wouldn't really call it scapegoating.
I don't even disagree with you that axing him may have been the right move... I'm just saying that I hope Mangini doesn't think making a guy that far down the totem pole an "example" is going to strike fear into any of the "big money" guys...
I don't understand why people are reading so much into the cutting of a fringe player who was consistently making mistakes. Mangini is scapegoating....now did Mangini come out and say we lost the game b/c of Washington, so I am cutting him. Or, if Washington has played better we wouldn't be 1-8...of course not. Mangini is sending a message...ST players get cut every week...it's part of the NFL. I am sure that Brad Smith is saying, I need to play better or I will be cut. (Nope, but maybe/hopefully Adrian Clarke is.)
while washington wasnt a star, he was more than a 'fringe' player. he has been a top special teamer for the past few years. he was a solid role player. 4 penalties in 3 games when youre really only on the field for the ST plays thats not good. thats just too many mental mistakes. i cant blame them for cutting him....but i wouldnt be shocked if he ends up on another team within the next week or so. if not he will be on the PS and stay within the organization.
If Mangini has a better player to replace Washington on the roster then it's not scapegoating. If he just cut him because of a couple of obvious errors on his part then it is scapegoating. Obviously we don't know what was happening between Washington and Mangini other than the obvious displeasure with him after the errors on Sunday. However Washington also was the best option Mangini thought he had at that position on special teams, otherwise he wouldn't have been playing. How many players get cut on Tuesday because of errors they made on Sunday? A half dozen a season? Over the entire NFL?
