Simple. Rank the new starting quarterbacks of teams with new starters. Basically the best situation to win and who will play better in the 2009 season. There might be more than 7 teams with new starters, but these are the seven I thought of. 1. Bears-Jay Cutler He is a great quarterback who made the Pro Bowl last year. He was thrown out of town by Josh McDaniels. I expect him to succeed in Chicago who might have never had a QB of his caliber. 2. Jets-Mark Sanchez/Kellen Clemens Whoever wins this battle will have a great offensive line and great runningbacks supporting them, not to mention a Top 10 defense most likely. Both have a great chance to succeed. At mini-camp Clemens looked better, but the $50 million contract may say other wise. 3. Vikings-Sage Rosenfels/Tarvaris Jackson/Brett Favre The Vikings won their division last year, but were nothing special. This might sound crazy, but if Favre was on this team I could see them improve to a Super Bowl caliber team, but Rosenfels and Jackson aren't very good. Favre has too many question marks too. If he doesn't show, these other 2 guys' confidence will likely be shaken atleast and Favre would have been able to destroy 3 franchises within a 5 year period. That has to be a record. 4. Broncos-Kyle Orton This was tough, but I believe that the Broncos are still a better team than the Chiefs and will have a better chance to win in 2009. There is a chance that they could look like complete rebuild mode and go 6-10. I could see that. 5. Chiefs-Matt Cassell Cassell is a good quarterback, but he has lost all of the weapons he had in New England. He will improve the Chiefs, but they are not a playoff team yet. 6. Buccaneers-Luke McCown/Byron Leftwich I expect Leftwich to win this job, but nothing is official yet. The Bucs are a team in transition though, so don't expect them to do too much. Leftwich is a pretty good QB though. 7. Lions-Matthew Stafford/Daunte Culpepper (0-16) Yep. Alright, post your rankings! I expect the Bears, Jets, and Vikings to make the playoffs out of the teams on this list. Last year Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco and Chad Pennington were new starters who led their teams to the playoffs.
Your rankings will be too varied based on all of the multiple options for these teams. Ultimately I feel Cutler has the best option at success. The line is getting old but, but he has a decent run game and the guy can flat out throw.
If your going to look at statistical success the top choices are Cutler, Orton, and Cassell. The reason Cassell and Orton qualify is because they will be playing in a shot gun spread alot
Cassell should be #2 on that list. He actually threw for 3,693 yards last season. I think there's a reasonable argument he's #1. I'd definitely take him over Cutler. If he'd had the same number of throws that Cutler had he'd have been over 4,000 yards too.
I really can't believe you guys think Cassell is so good. Granted, he had a good year last year, but it has got to be easy when you play for the Pats. As much as I hate Belicheat, he gets the best out of his players because he puts them in roles where they will succeed. Time and time again, players have left the Pats to do nothing on their next teams. Belichick isn't stupid, he knows that Tom Brady could go down again, but easily gave up his backup QB without a fight. I believe Cassell will seriously struggle this year with a poor Oline in KC..
Cassell should be #2, no doubt about it. He had some big games down the stretch. Everyone else is either trash, mediocre, or unproven. Cassell might not be much better, but he's earned a #2 spot. Kyle Orton would be my #3. I don't know how you can possibly justify putting Mark Sanchez (as rookie), Kellen Clemens, Sage Rosenfels, Tarvaris Jackson, and Brett Favre ahead of Kyle Orton and Cassell.
I wouldn't put the Jets ahead of the Bears, Chiefs or Vikings. Even if the Vikings end up with a bum QB, the rest of the offense will help carry him. In Chicago Orton has shown he can be a serviceable passer and now that he's in a high powered offense he'll probably put up some good numbers. And KC has Thigpen and Cassel who both had very good years last season. The only way I see us beating all them out is if we start Clemens and Clowney and both have breakout seasons.
he's a system QB, that's the bottom line. a guy like cutler is a lot more valuable because he is going to make more plays, where you have to baby a guy like cassell.
I really don't expect much out of Cassell without the NE weapons .......To me, he's still a "project" kinda guy. Cutler will do well, Orton will suck as usual, Tampa Bay's got NOTHING, the Lions are gonna sit Stafford for awhile, and I'm HOPING Sanchez , along with our Defense, will lead us to the playoffs.............Also, If Brett Favre is healthy, the Vikings are IN the Super Bowl..the NFC is there for the taking
I think Sanchez/Clemens will have a better season stats and win-wise than Cassell or Orton. Things won't be easy for Cassell or Orton in 2009.
Can't just rank the QB situation, it depends how much they are on the field and where they start each drive. Counting the defnse and special teams units each team has I rank production (situation)as: Bears (All Pro QB with an All Pro defensive unit.) Vikings (The will have the threat of Brett's big arm, plus a good defense.) Jets (QB and RB situation in flux and a new defense to learn.) Broncos (Kyle will be average on an average team.) Bucs Chiefs (Defense sucks and Cassle a system QB has no supporting caste.) Detroit Losers (They aren't the Lions, they will be throwing their new QB to the Lions.)
I am pretty sure he will start over Thigpen. I don't feel the Chiefs have anyone to help Cassell succeed yet and that is part of the rankings, how the team will do.
For all the Jet fans who thought the Favre experiment was a disaster, I doubt there are many Viking fans who would prefer T. Jackson over him.
O I agree that Cassell will start, but I watched them both down the stretch and in my opinion Thigpen is a better QB than Cassell
