Finally, the Yankees called up Brett Gardner. Now the heat is really on Melky. http://www.thetandd.com/articles/2008/06/29/sports/doc486838a519540498394678.txt Monday - Scott Feldman, RHP (1-3, 4.60) vs Mike Mussina, RHP (10-5, 3.93) Tuesday - Kevin Millwood, RHP (5-4, 5.08) vs Joba Chamberlain, RHP (2-2, 2.03) Wednesday - Luis Mendoza, RHP (1-2, 5.40) vs Sidney Ponson, RHP (5-1, 3.50)
This should be a very interesting series, and one that is very telling of this team. Can we beat up on the Rangers with 2 of our best 3, and one looking for venegeance? So Gardner got the call, huh? Interesting. Let's get this youth movement kicked into high gear! The future can be now.
dude you do realize that your boy's unlikely run as starting cf for the yankees is coming to a much deserved end right? Its embarrassing that melky has been our cf and hopefully, hopefully the run is over
Gardner in CF tonight, I would think. I know all about him offensively, as a slap hitter with no power but good bat control and blazing speed, but how is he defensively?
Great range, average arm. The only thing I worry about with Gardner is his K rate. He is able to draw a walk better than anyone, but also was striking out at a 24% clip. That could be a problem. But just his speed, defense, and ability to draw a walk will make him quite valuable.
oh shit. from the way you were talking about him, I thought he had a better bat than that. But anything is an upgrade over melky
Don't expect Melky's departure any time soon. Matsui is out for a while, and I'm pretty sure Melky is going to rotate in left and center at least for the next couple weeks. Maybe this kick in the pants is what he needs. I'm telling you, I believe Cabrera has a lot of talent locked inside himself. His problems are all mental, just like Cano. Fitting that those two are such Bosom Buddies. I would think Alex would kick them in the ass at some point, rather than the frequent hugfests. In good news, I heard this weekend that Bruney should be making a return sooner than expected, possibly a couple weeks after the break, rather than mid-August. Chris Britton is coming along as well. Kennedy has actually been throwing in games, though I have no idea how he's been doing. All of this was said, I believe, during Friday night's radiocast, so take that for what it's worth from the sources.
Kennedy's had two good rehab starts, which were both good of course. I don't think it will be the case, but he might just end up being the guy who dominates the minors and can't get an out in the majors. I hope not, but it's a possibility. His mentality scares me a little.
I think Bret is a better hitter than Melky, but they both have no power. Hopefully Bret can make up for his lack of power and more than likely .270-.290 average with his wheels and range.
Eh, honestly, I think Moose needs to sit him down, and teach him the same lesson he learned himself this year. When something isn't working, stop using it. Kennedy seems to try to force things when they aren't working, which was always a Moose problem. Look at Mussina now though. When he feels something is off, he drops that pitch for the entire night. That's the right way to pitch, and Kennedy needs to learn that lesson. Such is the life of a guy who doesn't throw 95+. Garbage pitches only work when they're "on". You can miss with a 98MPH fastball and get a swinging strike. If you miss with a 76MPH changeup, it's a souvenier. Honestly, what I'd like to see is Kennedy get some work out of the pen for a while. Let him get some 7th inning work for the next few weeks to get his confidence back up. He's got the talent, like Melky and Cano. Like the Love Brigade though, he's got something in his head that's interfering with his natural talent. Girardi, Long, and Eiland really need to get on the ball. The vets are who they are. The kids need some guidance though.

On The Michael Kay Show, there was a brief summation of how the Yankees look at Gardner: - Nearly beat out Melky in Spring Training - Good range - Decent arm - Can put the bat on the ball (although he K's a lot) - Reminds one of Brett Butler - Definitely a legitimate MLB player - Could quickly phase out Melky - Will NOT stay on the bench and just be used for defense or to pinch-run. They want him to play every day. Also, his # in the minors was 21... I wonder if the YS faithful will deem him worthy to wear that number.
agree that that wole number 21 thing was ludicrous. i love paul oneill. love the man. but who the fuck cares if someone wears 21???
The Rangers score more runs than any other team. The Rangers give up more runs than any other team. The score? 2-1 Rangers. As I've said so many times before, the problem is not the Yankees' pitching. The lineup just sucks.
