Rex Ryan draft pick. Despite numerous red flags about effort. Ultimately all were true. http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/7438/quinton-coples
I guess his career is nearing an end, as is former Jet Mark Sanchez's. Not quite Vernon Gholston level of BUST, but pretty close. Imagine if the Jets would have taken Fletcher Cox, or Doug Martin or Alshon Jeffery or Josh Norman instead?
You guys are funny. You know they would have just drafted Stephen Hill in that spot. In hindsight, it would have been nice to have picked Dont'a Hightower, Lavonte David, and Josh Norman instead of Coples, Hill, and Demario Davis. Would have meant we could have used this years' picks on RG, RT, TE, or FB.
The only pick Rex Ryan ever made was John Connor..stop the nonsense, they were picks by Tannenbaum and Idzik.
Don't forget the Sanchez buddy pick during the strike/lockout. Scotty something or other WR from USC??
how was Sanchez teammate a 'Rex' pick, or Coples for that matter? at what point is the GM or Director of College Scouting responsible for doing their jobs and calling the shots? Is Bowles responsible for Jarvis Harrison? but yeah, Coples was a shit pick. never reach on talent when there are effort concerns in round 1.
I'm under the impression that Tanny gave Rex that pick. Surely this was the case for Boyd in any event.
why are you under the impression that Tanny gave Rex a Sanchez pick? that doesn't make sense to me, and it would still fall on Tanny either way. i absolutely despised that pick, and was on this board trashing it at the time. but it works both ways....i gotta give credit to Tanny for the Mo Wilk pick (or are you crediting Rex for that?) at least be consistent. it's the GM's job to acquire personnel. I don't believe coaches earn the credit or blame for those decisions.
In the book Low Collision Crossers, it is made clear that Rex literally picked that kid to say to Sanchez that he was thinking about him. Due to the lockout/strike (whatever it was) they were not allowed to be in contact. That was Rex saying hi.
there is a difference between a coach wanting a player (for whatever reason), and the GM/scouts acquiescing to that coach for that player against their own recommendations. I know Rex really liked both Mo Wilk and Bilal Powell that draft as well. But ultimately, he has no scouting background, and we weren't going to draft those players without our FO approval. The buck stops with the FO, specifically the GM. It's clearly their job to acquire personnel. They get the credit for what was a pretty good draft in 2011, and also get the 'credit' on McKnight. I've heard Tanny clearly state since he's left the Jets, that draft decisions were not being made by Rex outside of maybe John Connor, who Tanny wasn't against drafting either.
