ALAMEDA, Calif. (Aug. 28, 2006) -- The Oakland Raiders signed Jeff George to a contract, bringing back a player who hasn't thrown an NFL pass in five seasons.

George, the No. 1 overall pick by Indianapolis in 1990, joined the team in time for Aug. 28's afternoon practice. He previously played for the Raiders in 1997-98, starting 23 games and throwing 33 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

It is not immediately clear what his role will be on the Raiders, who already have Aaron Brooks, Andrew Walter and Marques Tuiasosopo on the roster.

George played with the Colts from 1990-93. He was in Atlanta from 1994-96, then spent two seasons with Oakland and one with Minnesota before joining the Redskins in 2000, first as a backup. He was signed by Seattle as insurance midway through the 2002 season, but didn't play. Chicago signed him late in the 2004 season, but he never played for the Bears either.

George, known for his strong arm and clashes with coaches, has a 46-78 career record as a starter and has never lasted longer than four years with any one of them.

George hasn't played since 2001, when he was cut after two games with the Redskins. In his last two games with Washington, George had a quarterback rating of 34.6, completing 23 of 42 passes with three interceptions.

In his next-to-last game with Washington, he and coach Marty Schottenheimer had an animated sideline discussion after George committed four turnovers and was removed from the game.

George also had a sideline argument with coach June Jones when he was with the Atlanta Falcons in 1996, and the team suspended him and then cut him.

George played well his first season in Oakland, throwing for 3,917 yards and 29 touchdowns in 1997. He struggled with injuries the following season, starting only seven games, and was replaced the following season by Rich Gannon, who was a better fit in coach Jon Gruden's West Coast offense.

I think they did it to steal the thunder of Tennessee signing Kerry Collins today.

Just the same, I'm going to need Jeaux to come by and explain the devious genius behind this move.

On the up-side, a strong fourth round pick was just RE-entered into the Fantasy Turd League draft pool. :)

Not that complicated, Just insurance untill Andrew Walter comes back from injury.
The diagnosis of quarterback Andrew Walter as having "Tendonitis Bursitis" in his throwing arm.(that could be a one to five week injury)

All the Raiders have behind A Brooks is M tuiasosopo . M Tuiasosopo really dosen't fit this raider offense. JeFf George on the other hand, is alot better fit. Has worked with R moss before and understands the vertical offense.
Has a good chance to be third string QB this year.

If Oakland signed Jason Sehorn, could you spin it to be a positive?

They signed a third string quarterback. Why are some people spinning it like this is significant news?

Oh wow. At first, I thought someone just revived a really, really old thread, but it's actually for real. So how old is Jeff George now anyway? Does the league even allow QBs to bring a walker onto the field? What will happen if he has to play a game during a Matlock rerun? Are the Raiders going to have to take a timeout everytime George needs to use the bathroom, or take a nap? How will his teammates endure him constantly prattling about "how it was done back in the day" or to "get off his lawn" after every down?

Jeez. Did Al Davis just stroke off and think he was back in the 90s? If there were still any doubts before, this verifies once and for all that he's lost it.

I feel bad for you, RJ...and this is coming from a Jets fan.

Again, THEY SIGNED A THIRD STRING QUARTERBACK! And you're using that against Al Davis? He's still the guy who pawned off a backup tight end to move into the first round last year, remember?...

HAHAHAHAHAHA... Wow, even if it is a 3rd string QB, that's still odd. The man hasn't thrown a pass or even been in the league in a couple years. It's not like he was any good before he retired anyway. They should have at least grabbed somebody who has recently played.

How old is he now? He was drafted in 1990 so he must be at least 38... I know we has Vinny playing, but at least he played the previous season and had some good times...

It's a little odd, I'll admit that. Although it has been rumored to happen since March, I never thought it would happen at all, let alone this close to the season. It makes me wonder if there might be a Tui trade in the works. Walter had a sore shoulder last week but he says he's fine and he'll play on Thursday.

The way I look at it, MOST of the league is in trouble once you get to the #2 QB. ALL of the league is in trouble once you get to the #3 QB. Doesn't matter to me if the #3 guy is Jeff George, a 30 year old journeyman, or a 6th round rookie...

Remember Vince evans. He was alot older than Jeff George and I remember him leading raiders from a come from behind victory against the jets.(numerous other teams) . Like I said If Jeff george still has the arm its not that bad of a signing. 1. Knows vertical offense 2. Has worked with Randy Moss 3 Can work with the young QBs(Andrew Walter and Kent Smith- most likely headed for practice squad. BIG ,strong, and very mobile QB.

Depends really on the veteran that was signed. Raiders signed a Duane Starks and tyronne poole this offseason. (sorta like a sehorn signing) Neither might make the roster ,but they already paid dividends. Both were able to give Raiders young CBs(N Asomugha, F washington and S routt )some valuabe tips to look for from Wrs. Also going by camp reports and preseason games ,all youngs Cbs have raised their games up from last year.

So in that instance, it was a good signings.

Wow, this move makes us bringing Vinnie back after an off season on his couch look absolutely brilliant. The Jeff George blowups were nearly as entertaining as TO's.

Just what the hell sorts of tips do you imagine Poole and Starks would be giving, Jeauxseph? How to enjoy the breeze when receivers are blowing by you? Maybe which end of the "Cool Zone" bench is best for the different summer months?

Jeff George is an altogether different story. As a mistake-prone, mediocre, misfit of a player with a bad attitude and a puzzling ego, he should have been wearing a Raider yooneeform years ago. I guarantee you he's been writing letters of Nutsy Al Davis twice a year for the last six years. Seems like Al got tired of reading the same ol' box of All-Bran, and gave the guy a shot. I, for one, am tickled giddy.

Sunday Jack Your not a bright man. Lets see a Coach who hasn't coached in years(art Shell) + Offensive coordinator(tom Walsh) been outof game a long time + A qb (Jeff George) been out almost as long as both = Raiders offense going Retro. Not to mention Lil Huggy Bear is back up RB. Im stuck in a timezone.

Seriously FEAR THE RAIDERS DEFENSE THIS YEAR.
