At pick 17 I'm not a big fan of anyone that will be available - Mauluga, Curry, Jenkins, Brown, Orakpo, Crabtree, and Raji will be gone. There could be a top OT available like Michael Oher or Jason Smith or others and there will be a team that will want to trade up to land that player. Like the Eagles did last year with the Panthers, we could trade down to the top of the 2nd round, pick up an extra 4th, and a future 1st. I would take a pick in the 5th-7th round range instead of a 4th if it would help make the deal go through, but that is what the Eagles got last year and we have a higher pick than they did. The main thing is getting another high 2nd rounder and getting a 2010 1st. Our draft could look like the following 2a) Tyson Jackson, DE 2b) Sean Smith, CB 3) Rhett Bomar, QB 4a) Jarron Gilbert, DE 4b) Cody Brown, OLB 5) Mike Wallace, WR 6) Sammie Lee Hill, NT 7) Greg Isdaner, RG With FA signings of: FS O.J. Atogwe and DE Chris Canty and QB Byron Leftwich In 2010 we can finish the job 1a) Arrelious Benn, WR 1b) Rolando McClain, ILB 2) Terrance Cody, NT 3) LeGarrette Blount, RB 4) Sergio Kindle, OLB 5) Ben Ossai, RT 6) Mickey Shuler, TE 7) Jeremy Boone, P All-around great team
I don't know why there are so many Tyson Jackson fans??? His body of work is good, not great. He doesn't excell at anything, except being a Huge player for that position. Not a great pash rusher, Ok stopping the run......he's almost a J.A.G. Being from LSU and almost 300lbs makes him a great player???.....I don't think so. I've watched my share of LSU games, at times he was the invisible man. Jackson is a good value in Rd 2, just not enamored with his skills. "Mount" Cody..........at top 15 pick next year. The guy is a freak!! Why would you draft Jackson and then Gilbert? Overkill to me. Sean Smith will be drafted in rd1....mark it down. Rhett Bomar....another Ainge type on the team. Arrelious Benn, WR......I'm on Board, love this kid. The Jets need to get a Vet QB in FA. Kellen, Rat, Ainge and or Bomar is NFL suicide. While I do believe Ratliff may emerge as a Good QB, we need to have a Vet for insurance. Leftwich, Sims etc.
If you're not keen on anybody there what makes you think any GM will be either? Meaning why would they trade up?
Mickey Shuler - TE..... now i am only on my first cup of joe this morning so please tell me this is an offspring of daddy shuler. jil
Yse Sir!! He looks like a good player. Could be a Rd 2 or 3 player in 2010 with a good season. Rd 6 seems low to me.
Tyson Jackson is your prototypical 3-4 DE. I like Gilbert more since he is more explosive but I can't think of any other position I'd rather have at that spot atop the 2nd, except for maybe Kenny Britt or DHB. Having Canty, Jackson and Gilbert gives us 2 very good 3-4 DEs and one very good developmental DE. We can keep or get rid of Ellis thus saving a lot of cap room, but the end result is a great rotation at DE. Everyone will be fresh and as a result our pass rush/d-line will be better. Rex Ryan also uses hybrid formations so there might be times when he would want Jackson, Canty and Gilbert in all at the same time. There is a reason why Terrance Cody did not come out for this year's draft - his hype died down and people saw that he was not the amazing talent everyone said he is. He is just a huge body that is a one-dimensional run-plugger. He barely played 50% of the snaps for Bama because of his poor endurance. Next year there are also a ton of great DTs that will likely be in the draft - Suh, Austin, McCoy, Granger, Jones, Atkins, Oghobaase, and Woods if he ever gets it together. No 4-3 team will draft Cody and many 3-4 teams will be wary of drafting a player in the 1st round that will only be able to play 50% of the snaps. That is no problem for us since we have Jenkins and they can spell each other, and Sammie Lee Hill as a developmental guy as well. I would not be surprised at all if Sean Smith was drafted in the 1st round - but for right now he is rated as a 2nd round pick. The CBs that are above him are Jenkins, Davis, Moore, Macho, and Alphonso Smith. If you want to take him to play safety - even though he will be a CB - Delmas, Johnson, Chung, and William Moore are all rated above him even though it is hard to tell where Moore's stock will be by April. I think he will go anywhere from bottom of the 1st to late 2nd and we are right in the middle of that range. If Josh Freeman is there than I'd rather take him over Bomar, but Bomar is not an Ainge type at all. While inconsistent Bomar is a superior athletic talent and has an NFL-sized arm. I do have us signing Leftwich if you looked at the 3 FA signings. Arrelious Benn is the man. Best WR in college football.
I don't like Jackson at all. If we're going to trade down, we'd be better off moving back in the 25-28 range to take Clint Sintim.
I'm all for Clint Sintim or Sean Smith in the first. Trading back is what I'm hoping for...but only if Mark Sanchez is gone. I'm not a Tyson Jackson fan either...
I'm also a fan of trading down if Sanchez isn't there, but who would want to move up to 17 for a decent price?
If a team needs a LT and a guy like Michael Oher or Jason Smith is available still. If a team needs a RB and a baller like Beanie Wells or Knowshon Moreno is still there. If a team needs a NT and BJ Raji is still there. If a team needs a LB and Aaron Curry is still on the board. I can think of a few scenarios.
I like Smith because of his size, but I'd be more inclined to take Sintim in the 1st and a CB like Macho or Mickens in the 2nd.
Tyson Jackson is a very good 3-4 DE, if we go D and a lot of the others are gone you pick him then you have a rotation starting to grow.
It certainly would be great to move back from the 1st to the 2nd and pick up a 1st next year. I can see them doing this but only if the players they really target are off the board. we've traded up a lot and it's hurt the depth.
if Aaron Curry is available he is taken and lines up across from Pace.... he is a top 8 pick, he has to have a rap sheet in the next 3 months to drop in the 1st round.
haha... funny enough - I actually typed 5, thought about it and went back and changed it to 8. I now feel foolish for doing it. I knew he would be invited to NY come late April.
Smith's size/speed ratio is incredible, scouts will take notice..........the Combine will speak the truth. I'm not saying Sean Smith is like Dunta Robinson, (DR is much smaller),.......but IMO, the scenario will be similar the way Dunta shot up the board in 2004. At this time in 04, late Jan, Dunta was considered a late Rd 1 prospect at best. I believe he went #10, I was hoping the Texans weren't going to take Vilma. I was a Huge Vilma fan for our 4-3 defense..............oh well, we know how that turned out.
I think Smith is super talented but teams are now noticing that a great pass rush is better than a great "cover corner" and Smiths best position in the pros is a safety and Robinson didnt really have great competition for that #2 corner spot. Vontae Davis and DJ Moore are both better prospects that Carroll and Gamble were. As for trading down im all for it we still get the guys we want, but not Jackson he's overrated
