I'm watching the Giants/Cards now and they took Cain out for a pinch hitter to lead off the 8th with the Giants down 1-0. Now if they take the lead this inning who gets the win? Technically he's out of the game and the pinch hitter is the pitcher at the moment. Obviously the pinch hitter shouldn't get the win, and the official scorer does have the ability to award the win to someone else if he deems the guy who was in there when the winning run scored was "ineffective", and this would seem to be the case in such a situation. So technically it should go to the reliever that replaces the pinch hitter. The part I'm unclear on though is if the starter is still eligible if no one else has thrown a pitch or not. So do any of you who watch the NL on a regular basis recall anything like this happening?

Giants only tie it BTW, so this game won't answer my question for me.

The starter, as he's the pitcher of record until another pitcher throws a pitch.
