I think this is my first thread but maybe I was drunk one time and made my first then, anyways I'd like to ask people what you would view as a real competition at the passer position this season. I'm not of the opinion that we have had a real comp since... I don't know when? Pennington never really competed against Vinny, Clemens was just a backup, Favrerere was penciled in, Sanchez basically got handed the job until preseasongate, and Geno got the same treatment. What is your idea of a real QB comp? How long does it extend into the preseason and who are the real candidates in our near future? Should someone be named before camp starts? If we draft a rookie, how much rope does he get? This could be a pretty annoying situation with a New regime.
My idea of a real QB competition is when the QB's compete and the best one gets named the starter. Name the starter after preseason. If we draft a QB who is clearly better than anyone we sign/have, start 'em.
This is what bothers me, if you don't name a starter until after preseason (which is the week leading up to week 1 of the regular season) then you are splitting starter snaps between the competitors and nobody on the offense has any real chemistry with a full time passer
I think a realistic QB competition going into camp could be Geno, Veteran( maybe moore or fitzpatrick) and a mid round prospect (petty/grayson/carden/mannion). With a new regime, I dont think Geno would be handed the job before camp; he'd have to earn it. My gut tells me that we wont end up with Mariota or Winston, but if we did that would completely change things. I think Matt Moore could do decent for us. He could do what Orton did for Buffalo last year, and with talent added across the roster he could potentially lead us to a winning record. If the coaches believe that Geno beat him out in camp, then Id back up that decision too. This regime has no prior ties to Geno so in order for him to start, he will have to actually win the competition, unlike last year.
Sign Fitzpatrick, trade a conditional for K Cousins, and let those two and Geno duke it out. One pile of turd will have to smell the best. Hopefully Bowles/Rodgers know how to run a defense.
Thanks, and once one of the QBs clearly separates himself. Cant really tell when that will be as of now
Your post makes me think you want to hold out for a QB in 2016, which isn't a bad idea tho I'm not sure about the QBs in next years draft. I know Fitz had a good season and a half with Gailey, would you see him winning out early with Cousins as a backup? How far into camp would you expect him to get starter snaps?
The thing that bothered me the past couple of years is that it was portrayed as a QB comp bit really wasn't, and the charade was played out to the point that the eventual starter didn't get the snaps he needed to start an effective game one. Where is the intelligent breaking point that tells you to call your starter and help him get prepared for the season?
Yea that absolutely was an issue. I dont think that will happen this time around though. To answer that question, Id say give each guy 1 preseason start. Im sure by the time of the first preseason game, it will come down to 2 QBs. Whichever QB plays better in those games along with camp and everything should be named the starter, and should then be taking 1st team reps in camp and in the final 2 games.
Target Sam Bradford, give Geno a chance to develop behind him this year. If that flops, target QB in 2016 draft.
I agree with all of this. I think the winner of the competition should be named before the first preseason game so that the starter gets the majority of the reps so he is prepared for the season and has his timing down and chemistry with the receivers. If the starter struggles, they can always make a switch.
Do you really think its realistic to choose a starter before they face another team? I know the first PS game isn't much of a contest but it could be a good cold water test for the two top contenders, maybe 2 series for 1 and 2 series for the other? I don't know if I would feel that comfortable with them naming a guy with our current situation that early.
Doesn't matter. We are either holding down the fort with a vet and developing a rookie QB who isn't ready to start yet or we catch lightning in a bottle with a rookie and build an offense around him as he goes through first year growing pains. Better than .500 would be great in '15. The most optimistic outlook would be playoff competitor in '16.
I know it's early, but yes I do. Bowles has said that if a player turns the ball over he won't play. It should be glaringly apparent whether Geno is still turning the ball over a lot by the first preseason game. If Bowles is true to his word and Geno is still turning the ball over, then he won't be the starter, even if he shows more potential and plays better than the vet FA. I agree with you that if one waits until the end of preseason then the starter doesn't really have the necessary reps. Perhaps one could wait until after the 1st or 2nd preseason games, but I wouldn't wait any longer than that.
That is the exact way I felt at the beginning of 2009 actually. Then we caught lightning in a bottle everywhere but QB and had a dream run. I would settle for overachieving and making the playoffs with a stopgap veteran and upsetting a team in round 1. Playoff experience for a young unproven team is vital, ask the Seahawks 3-4 years ago.
It would be great if we made the playoffs but it's not like we have a QB coming into an established offense, it's an entirely new CS so I'm not going to be too concerned about everything coming together right away. I'm sure there will be a leaning curve for all the positions and plenty of screw ups to go around.
Can't wait til our days of this QB competition shit are over OMG!!! Drives me crazy. FRANCHISE QB WHERE ART THOU!?
