So I've seen in a number of threads talk about winning this game hurts our chance of getting Jameis or Mariota (sp)....that may be the case...both of those guys probably go top 5 next year. I just can't condone "throwing" games...I mean, let's be honest here. "Tanking" is just another way of saying let's "throw" the game. Don't they send people to prison for that? Having said that, and depending upon how well he plays the rest of the year, how do we feel about Mike Vick being our QB for the next 2 years with possibly Smith and/or a QB drafted in later rounds...or possibly higher being his back up? I know he has a history of injury etc...but...you know...you do play to win the game... Thoughts?? I mean...am I the only one who feels Vick has a few years left in him?? I don't know...spit balling different ideas here... It would give us the opportunity to add some more offensive players through the draft and give a couple off seasons worth of FA pickups as well... I also am on the bandwagon that the season is done except for going through the motions of playing out the schedule...so why not be positive and get out in front of this? Doesn't matter who will be the GM/Coach next year...we still need to go get players. Let's kick it around a bit.
Yeah Vick cant be counted on long term. If Woody isnt going to make a splash for a QB on the outs with his current team , then we need to draft a guy and bring in a FA.
Vick has fooled franchises before and it never ends well because his style leads to him getting injured. You can't go into next year with Vick as your QB, and in no way can you go into next year with Smith being in any way, shape or form able to play a meaningful down. While today's win was retarded from a fans point of view (players will never tank, so that's not even an issue), it doesn't change the fact that this team needs a franchise qb.
How about starting Vick while developing a draft pick with decent upside who's not quite NFL ready (Brett Hundley second round). I have no idea, I'm just throwing out ideas. I'm not sure there will be much available by way of free agency.
This is what I'm talking about...tossing ideas around...especially like this. Find someone we can groom into the roll who isn't necessarily starting material right out of the gate. Just seems like we are never going to be "bad enough" to get the top pick but always "just good enough" to get far enough away that we lose out on the top talent. Without trading the "farm" away, that is, to move up... As well, if we can say that Vick could be a "stop gap" for 2 years we could look at what is in the freshman/sophomore classes in college as well... I have to be straight up here...the only thing I know...or at least can reasonably speculate accurately on...is...that Florida State kid Jameis...New York will eat that kid alive. He has waaayyy too many red flags right now for a team as bad as the Jets are, in the market we are in, to bring him in and expect him not to turn out a bust... He is just waaayyyy to sketchy. But that is strictly an opinion. I don't know the kid...but it seems that his name is in the news way to much...and none of it is good.
Agreed, his past performances have led to me thinking the same of Vick. However, watching Vick start the last two weeks, he seems to be protecting himself a bit more than usual. Although he has had the occasional reckless run, he has also had quite a few slides and runs out of bounds. If he can continue that trend, he can be a good QB option for next year. The FA class of QBs is pretty bad, and the guys that aren't terrible are made of glass. So he might as well be the guy to stay here. Problem is, he is going to require at least 2 years to stay here. I don't think that is the worst thing in the world though. IF, the Jets are even given the opportunity to get Mariota or Winston, both will need someone to sit for a season (maybe even a season+). The Jets history of QB development is pretty bad, and I really don't want to see another rookie starting at QB next season. They really need a solid veteran to keep the seat warm. Hoyer could be another option, but who knows how that will pan out in Cleveland. I'll pass on Locker, Bradford, and Ponder etc.
I want Mariota...good win but we need a QB that can perform at a high level and has potential to change a franchise. Marcus can do that. No one will remember any other wins this year come 2015 season
The Jets might be better off trying to work a trade for a veteran QB at this point and developing a young guy as he becomes available in the next few drafts. The Cardinals were in a similar position to the Jets coming off of 2012, with not quite enough talent overall and major problems at the QB position. They picked up Carson Palmer cheaply in a trade and they're 14-6 with him at QB since then. It's hard to find that kind of deal but when you've spent 3 or 4 years trying to develop young QB's with no success and being unable to turn other team's failures (Kevin Kolb) into successes it might make sense to just go get somebody who you know can play the game for you. QB is the one position you can make an accurate trade for because if the QB is good enough to make you deal for him the odds are good you'll improve significantly once he takes the field for you. I recognize that the team that paid through the nose for Palmer didn't get a benefit from the deal but that was the Raiders and they're one of those franchises that hasn't done anything right over the last decade.
hoyer is your guy then, he's the best option unless you want to deal for bradford and his twice injured knee. hes not THAT good but he'll chomp at the bit for a chance to start and has a chance to be a solid game manager while you sort out better younger options.
Only possible current starter that I could see possibly getting moved via trade could be Cutler, and those chances are super slim. Hoyer is a FA, but I have a feeling the Browns will lock him up and attempt to trade Manziel.
The Falcons are 3-6 with Matt Ryan and 7-18 (I know that sounds impossible) over the last two seasons. They might be persuaded to trade him after the season in the right deal. The Bears are 3-5 with Jay Cutler and 5-11 over the last 16 starts by him. New coach in town last year. They might be persuaded much more cheaply than the Falcons with Ryan. The Panthers might be having second thoughts about Cam Newton. The Bengals might be willing to deal Andy Dalton the way things are going. He'd be much better than what the Jets have tried to field at QB recently. Philip Rivers is 32 and if the Chargers slide out of contention this year they might be willing to let him go if the right deal presented. None of these are likely to happen but the point is that good QB's do get traded occasionally in mid to late career, when things haven't bounced right for their teams in awhile. Drew Brees. Jay Cutler. Carson Palmer. Alex Smith. All starting QB's with winning records who got traded when something flipped for their teams. It's a 50/50 proposition for the acquiring team but so is drafting a 1st round QB. Actually drafting a 1st round QB is less likely to work out than trading for a proven one unless you are giving up several 1's in the process.
In one paragraph you say tanking is criminal. The next you suggest starting an old washed up QB for two years which is basically tanking. The answer to QB is not on our roster.
I came up with a similar list, but I honestly didn't even think about Rivers, I'd sign on for that one. I want no part of Dalton, and Newton I think is safe (they have built nothing around him). Cutler's contract is what makes him expendable to me. That being said, is it worth giving up chips to get one of these guys to get close/similar production from Vick. If the same CS is here next year, Vick also has years experience in the system. If it's a new CS, it's a whole new ballgame and anything can happen.
Starting a vet isn't tanking. Is it tanking to start a rookie QB and waste 2 seasons on him not developing? It's time to do things right, get a starter, draft someone and have them learn with the clipboard until it's time.
If Tampa dumps Glennon, I think we should jump on him. I think he has more potential than Mariota or Winston-- but he's certainly not without his own problems. This is assuming we bring in a new, offensive-minded, coaching staff that can actually run with him. Maybe we get to skip the worst of the Rookie teething issues, and still get a top young talent.
One, only a retard on the order of Idzik wants Jameis.Period. ESPECIALLY.NOT.HERE. This should be Vicks team for two or 3 more years, and Smith should be told flat out that he's a backup for that legnth of time, That gives you time to build a foundation, (Brick,Colon and Mangold are not getting any younger and RT,LG are already fucked) Ivory is solid, for a year or two. You really want Zeke elliot from TOSU when he comes out... You need 2 LB's a Corner, on that side of the ball. In 3 years, your line should be set for 5, You will know if Smith can play, and have another Draft choice chasing him, but the rest of the roster should be a solid mix of youth, and FA players.
