they are saying that mangini is getting tough...making things less country clubish...with the locker room being less luxurious...taking out the carpets....no more spas with blaring music...Anti-Herm kinda motive...same stuff that parcells and vermeil does...OLD SCHOL type of stuff...basically hes being a hard ass like Gruden was when he first joined the Raiders
Its on ESPN now and they're talking about how tuff he's going to be and that the easy way of Herm is gone. They said that he's calling players out in meetings and is acting more like Gruden in his 1st season. It will replay at 6:30pm on ESPN news
I liked when the other guy said "count your pennies and the dollars will take care of themselves" I started digging through the sofa cushions for change!
And when Herm took over from Groh, all the talk was how it was too tough, and now, with Herm being a players coach, they'll be fresher for the season, and blah blah blah. First off, Herm ran a tough training camp last year. In fact, it was the toughest of his Jets tenure, and look what happened. I just want a happy medium. Don't let the inmates run the asylum, but don't bet the living hell out of them either. These guys aren't in the NFL because they are soft. They don't need a boot camp. Nor do they need club med. They need a nice, average training camp to learn the systems, and their assignments. And they need to do it without getting hurt.
I went to TC quite a few times last year.... and if that wasn't a soft camp, there is no such thing. They jogged through wind sprints, half of them joked and laughed through stretching, going through the motions half heartedly. Yes, he ran two-a-days, but I'd guess that 75% of the practice time was spent with players hands on hips. Donnie worked the defense a little harder than the offense was pushed, but my HS practices were MUCH tougher than anything I saw last year. Should the training room be a relaxation retreat for players, with couches, music and whatever else they had in there? Its for treating players with injuries.... I don't see the big deal. I think Mangini will be sure to let them get some R&R, but not in the trainer's room.
Actually from the reports in the papers and from fellow board members (especially TBJ last year), last year's camp was very light. 2004 was the year when there were reports of Herm running a tougher camp (see the Albany fiasco). IMO, the reason why players got injured last year was because they weren't conditioned properly.
