My PS3 just randomly stopped reading games today. I know its the actual unit and not the games, as it won't read anything - not even DVD's. I called up Sony and it turned out my PS3 is 2 friggen months out of warranty and they wanted $150 plus tax and shipping to have it serviced. I told them to shove it up their ass. For an extra $50 I can buy a 360. Has anyone else ever experienced this problem with their PS3? I'm heading out to Staples to pick up a can of that compressed air to clean out the system as thoroughly as possible as I seem to recall a similar problem with my PS2 years ago and it turned out that dust was the culprit. I'm far from what you would call a "techie", but does anyone have any other easy, brainless suggestions to try that might rectify the problem if the cleaning doesn't work?
yes, i used to have to do this to my PS2. I took the entire thing apart about 4 times (once every 6 months) once it began to break down. I made sure I cleaned the laser with windex and cleaned anything that looked like it would have to help make the disc run. Keep in mind, this was a PS2. It may be harder to crack open a PS3.
I had the laser go on me once , bought one off ebay , and its still going strong , easy job to do. I think the PS3 would be alot more complex and would think long and hard before opening it up myself.
I had mine go on me and thankfully I had only had it for 2 weeks so I got to return it. I'm more posting here because I know your frustration.
Cleaned it out real good with the compressed air to no avail. Looks like I have myself a $500 paperweight.
check craigslist, I know in SoCal there are always guys advertising on there that they can come to your place and fix it for $50 or so while you wait.
I had to format my hard drive once due to games not playing. The game would load but freeze at the intro screen. Not sure that helps you though, but formatting may work, who knows.
