I use my PS3 laying flat. After awhile of use with certain games (God of War 3 triggers my problem), the blow out vent in the back gets extremely loud. It sounds like an A/C unit or a jet taking off. I'm concerned the PS3 is running really hot. All of the vents are clear and I can't see dust in the vents. The PS3 sits on top of two empty CD cases and there is about 5 inches of room from the back of the PS3 to my 40 inch Samsung LCD TV. Any suggestions to make the fan stop sounding so loud?
You should try and put it in an area where there isnt much dust. Put it on a stool or something instead of on the floor. I have had the same ps3 since it came out and I think thats basically how to keep it going.
^ I'm going to try this... The dust has to be the issue here. The room its in is a dust bowl. Has anyone opened their PS3 before?
My ps3 started to do this as well. It's been in the same spot for 3 years, and the fan only started blasting recently. I may need a new one. When is PS4 coming out?
I don't own a PS3 nor have I ever taken one apart but if your fine with voiding the warranty -- assuming it's still in the warranty period -- take it apart and clean out the dust from the fan bay. When it's clean take a cuetip and some rubbing alcohol and clean the surrounding area. In all honesty you'd be better served visiting a PS3 forum, specifically the hardware and modding sections. Don't do anything unless you're absolutely sure and confident of the results as dislodging or breaking a tiny piece may 'brick' your system. Good luck
You'll only blow the dust and grime onto the motherboard and make things potentially worse. Also vompressed air can ruin the optical laser that reads your games. I know this from experience when I blasted my disc drive on my comp a few years ago with compressed air.
Mine's well over warranty...and I've read forums...the kids on there are worse than TGG veterans going after newbies. I've read the fan cycle trick, tried it, didn't work... I vacuumed the vents, that didn't work either...
Those are signs of overheating. Also, does the fan kick into high instantly upon start up or does it take like 30 mins to an hr of gameplay? What model do you have? I had the original 60 gig with backwards compatability for PS2. dealt with a few YLOD's (yellow light of death). your PS3 will beep and turn off during operation. then, when you turn it on it will power up, the fan will turn on, it will beep once, youll see the green light as if its normally functioning, and then a couple seconds later itll beep twice and flash a yellow light and the PS3 will power itself down. this was the result of a few years of constant abuse. plenty of gaming. keeping it in areas that were more prone to dust and especially leaving it on when not in use. (for over a year it doubled as a dvd player which id fall asleep leaving on till i awoke). but the biggest issue was the model point in case the older ones power consumption and wattage is like over 30% less efficient than the models that followed. the previously explained YLOD is pretty much a failsafe in the PS3 to prevent itself from frying the motherboard (in most cases). 9 times out of ten its due to overheating, sometimes it might be a corrupted hard drive. (ironic since he ended up being better at it then I was) I actually gutted my ps3 (friend of mine had same model and issue) and reflowed the processor chipsets on the motherboard. it usually works but I was self taught so eventually it gave out and I tired of feeling awesome for the fact i fixed my PS3 and then having to worry about the next time id have to do it. even though I felt MacGuyver'esque when doing so. but it is a process one that I got tired of to the point i asked my friend to take the final crack at it and he accidentally tore the ribbon cable for the blu ray drive. tips:keep it away from dust (store it as high as u can and not in cramped entertainment center crevaces if you plan on playing for more then 2 or 3 hrs, make sure you give some decent time in between your next booting of the system. theyve taken measures to address this by reducing chipset sizes(reducing the rate of which it will heat up internally, and redesigning power supplies to be more efficient) I actually have a Slim now and the thing runs like Clockwork. if you have any questions PM me.
Best bet is to sell that one and buy one of the newer ones. The fan sound is very annoying and i've had that happen to two of my ps3's. Fortunately, i have yet to experience the sound with the newer slimmer ones.
PS3 cleans itself Hole eject button while its off. While holding eject turn it on and tada! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhU4_Rm0GQU&feature=player_embedded
They talked about the PS3 being a 10 year console like the PS2 just happened to be. I remember reading that they were talking about this generation of consoles lasting 10 years. So if that's true, I think it would be around 2016. Microsoft isn't talking about a new system yet so that doesn't put too much pressure on Sony, and Microsoft isn't using Blu-ray yet. Since the games still look very similar on both systems and Blu-ray combined with the PS3's processor system is supposed to be able to produce consistently superior graphics, I would assume that we still haven't seen the best of what the PS3 can do....so maybe that's yet to come. If so, I would not think we will see a new system for some time.
I think we may see microsoft come out with a new system in about two years. Games that could be played on the Ps3 on one disk, like final fantasy XIII, have to be multiple disk games for the xbox. So yeah I dont think the PS4 is coming out for a while. The xbox 720 maybe.
It's God of War 3 on Hard and Titan difficulty. The game uses the shit out of the processor. I've babied this PS3, and I've had every generation of Playstation so I'm familiar with the care. I have the 40g original PS3. Fan kicks into overdrive like 40 mins of gameplay. Never does it with movies or other games. Who knows...if the games are like GoW3 and use the processor I may have to designate this PS3 as blu ray only and get a new slim for games.
