I know the focus has clearly been on the offense but check out this preseason recap of our defense given most if not all starters will sit on Thursday. http://nyjetsuniverse.wordpress.com/2012/08/28/preseason-recap-lets-talk-defense/
It's a good recap. It's important to note though that LaRon Landry has not played a full season since his 2nd year in the NFL. Expecting him to play more than 8 or 9 games is not reasonable at this point. That achilles is going to flare again at some point and then the Jets will likely have issues in the middle of the field again. The linebackers are also an aging group and I expect them to get worn down over the season by the number of times they're put on the field by the offense after just a short breather. While I think the players are there for Rex to get another all-time great defense I suspect it will wind up just being very good in the end.
If Landry can stay healthy then all I got to say is I am going to be excited watching guys com across the middle! Ellis looks much better and dominate. I knew it would take him some time but I am excited about are defensive line for the next decade. All this talk about Wilkerson breaking out this year and I think Coples has looked more impressive. Not that Wilk hasnt looked good. This D is looking scary, a lot more pressure on the qb then last year. We look more consistent. Not many 8 seconds in the pocket like last season
This is what I was afraid of but I think it can be avoided by playing the 4-3 more with our young D line and having Davis/Maybin getting some snaps at LB as well. Scott, Pace and Thomas shouldn't have to play the entire game.
The Jets definitely have the personnel to change it up and run many fronts and rotate a lot of players. No one is going to be cheated in this defense.
I think landry should be on a pitch count all season. Maybe take him out of the game if we have the lead and put him in when we really need a stop. I haven't seen much of Bell yet this year. How has he looked ? If we can get by with having Smith and Bell out there half the time then we are in good shape.
I think they're the best defense in football with _______ at #2 coming in a distant second. I thought the coaches were overhyping Landry a bit but wow he's been everything they said he was. Coples looks like he'll make an instant impact, the second year players (Ellis & Wilkerson) look like they're ready to contribute, Maybin etc. and oh yeah REX! They're loaded.
How has Demario Davis been doing? I have not been able to fully watch a preseason game with great attention so far so I am wondering what this guy has been up to.
It's really sad -- if we had an average offense, an offense we knew wasn't elite but was capable, we could probably really go far. I'm not saying the offense isn't capable, but fom what they've shown, I can't help but wonder if this defense will be wasted by such a poor offense,
Most Jets fans probably assumed the defense would be good... but there has definitely been some extra excitement added by some individual performances so far this preseason. Now the next step will be who has the exciting performances in the second half of the regular season. Guys like Ellis could get more time then Pouha, Allen over Landry, Bush over Bell, Maybin over Thomas or Pace, Davis over Scott, Coples over Devito or Wilks. Its these unknown commodities that make it exciting. There is so much upside. Hopefully, Hill or Cumberland or McKnight also jump in.
Agreed. God I hope they can put it together on offense. I think it's about a coin flip at this point between average and bad. Greene does not give me any confidence in the run game but who the hell knows. Let's get this thing started already.
But losing Mario Williams the greatest pass rusher to ever live will surely leave Houston in shambles.
i sense the sarcasm. losing Mario will surely hurt them because that's a big hole to make up. I think they'll still have a well above average pass rush, but nevertheless it's still a significant loss.
I think SF might have a better defensive front than the Jets on paper, but the Jets' secondary more than compensates for the difference. Revis-Cromartie-Wilson instantly elevates any pass rush in the league to the next level, IMO.
Wilson is probably the weak link in otherwise a great defense, and he could be a starting corner for many other teams
The key question is: Are you guys confident that this particular defense can beat New England this year? Or will Tom Brady have his way?
They didn't have Williams for most of 2011 and they still had the top-ranked defense in many categories. That's what made it easy for them to let him go. Not sure it's that big a hole to make up.
At home we have a good shot. On the road I'd be very surprised if we did. SF has a good secondary too. They don't have Revis but Carlos Rodgers is a damn good corner.
