This is a good thing obviously. We have a lot of young talent so the two extra spots could be very big for us to keep some young talent and not having to cut them. This is good news. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000380069/article/nfl-expands-practice-squads-to-10-players
Hopefully they create provisions for teams to protect protect practice squad players from getting picked up by other teams.
exactly. 2 more roster spots means almost another 65 jobs so players union will love that, fans will love its a win win.
They ARE restricted unless they're signing a player to their active roster. This promotes guys getting a chance to play & discourages quality players being stashed away for multiple seasons.
also changed eligibility rules. matt simms is now eligible, which is huge as it can allow us to go with 2 qb's. freeing up a valuable spot on the 53
According to Dick Cimini the accrued season rules have changed as well. He claims that Matt Simms is now PS eligible. The new practice-squad rules, announced Tuesday by the NFL, could have an impact on the Jets' quarterback depth chart. Under the new rules, Matt Simms (active for 16 games last season) is practice-squad eligible. Previously, a player who had earned one or more accrued seasons wouldn't have been eligible unless the player spent fewer than nine games on a club’s 46-player active list in each of his accrued seasons. Now, the Jets might be more apt to keep only two quarterbacks, knowing they could re-sign Simms to the practice squad, assuming he clears waivers. Ryan said he's not married to keeping three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster.
totally agree. hate that you have to waive a player before you can add them to the PS. Would be better if you could add them directly the PS. Allow teams to sign a guy off your PS, but require at least a 7th round pick as compensation.
yes, but simms would have to agree. vicks on 1 year deal. if your simms do you maybe hang around 1 more year and see if you can stick or do you pack up and leave and hope you are finding a better situation?
If I am reading this rule right, anyone with less than 32 active games could make the expanded practice squad, which opens it up to anyone effectively drafted over the past two years. In theory, we are so young that even guys like Hill or Willie Campbell are eligible.
I think we're moving toward a true minor league system. There are just so many more quality players than there were back in the 90's when they experimented w/ the World league & NFL Europe. Once capitol losses are in place to allow for proper infastructure it's a win for everyone. The NFL gets to promote another live product to secondary markets while improving/expanding player development, players get more of an opportunity to develop & make a living, & the fans get more exposure to the game in a more economical setting. As a CT Jets fan I have longed for the day where the Jets have a minor league affiliate. New Haven,Bridgeport or even Hartford would be attractive destinations for the Jets who haven't done much to include their nutmeg fan base despite their claim to being a "tri state metro" franchise. Course they'd likely be woo'd by one of the many secondary cities in Jersey. Go figure
Keep in mind that the practice squad pays like $100k, and the minimum salary would be like $550k or something like that. Given the chance to increase his income that much, I think he would have to go for it..
