From Randy Lange over at NewYorkJets.com... _______________________________________________________ 09/03 ? Eric Mangini, in a rare white "NY" logo polo shirt, announced how the Jets filled seven of their eight practice squad berths Sunday. The seven players signed to the P-squad, all with the Green & White during training camp: CB Manny Collins WR Chris Davis QB Brett Ratliff LB Jason Trusnik OL Robert Turner S Ray Ventrone RB Danny Ware "All of them will be out there today" at practice, Mangini said. "We still have one spot available if we sign anybody else." Ware, the free agent from Georgia, was the player many Jets fans were most concerned about. He had 183 rushing yards, the most by a Jets back in preseason since LaMont Jordan gained 194 as a rookie in 2001, and 207 yards from scrimmage, also the most since Jordan, who had 238 in '01. Mangini also announced the Jets' captains for the season, elected by a vote of the players Sunday: Offense: QB Chad Pennington and "first-time captain" WR Laveranues Coles Defense: LB Jonathan Vilma and DE Shaun Ellis Special Teams: K Mike Nugent and LB Brad Kassell "I'm very happy for them," Mangini said. "I'm always happy to see those guys take over that position. I think it's a really good group and I'm excited about that." But then again, it's easy to get excited today. Opening Day is less than a week away. I'll be back with a report from the Jets locker room and the first half-hour of practice early this afternoon.
And so Ware lands on our Practice Squad. Apparently he didn't look good enough in those pre-season games for a team to sign him off waivers. Will be interesting to see what kind of captain Laveranues Coles makes, given his frequently whining about practice, etc....
His comments should be taken with a pinch of salt. Very surprised to see Collins there , from what I've seen of him hes small , not very quick and doesn't read coverage to well. I know we are set at LB , but I would have preferred to see Costanzo there instead.
Couldn't agree with you more. I was really pulling for him. He's a fellow Lafayette Alum. We have one more spot left, so there is a slim, slim hope still out there.
Or while in college for a major 1-A program. He was passed by all 32 teams in the draft and also was cut by the Titans before training camp.
What? Ellis with a unhappy face? What the heck does that mean? He's their best DL by far,,, who the heck are you gonna pick instead? Geez.
What? Ellis is a leader on defense. A Veteran. He's easiest the biggest slam dunk captain they have, genius. Go overrate someone else on some nonsense board. An scapegoat someone else.
DL are useless on gameday. All they do is line up and play. Linebackers and Safeties are the most important players on defense. They make the calls, they make sure all the other players are lined up the right way, they know the playbook better than anyone else. Would you chose a FB over a QB on offense as well? Makes sense.
I didn't even notice Cotchery playing this pre-season. And if Rhodes was made Captain over Ellis, Rhodes would be embarrassed. Ellis is a veteran.
Another OS comment. Not enough that the place kicker is a Captain,,, make the P one also. The guys killing themselves on special teams will really feel SPECIAL if you do that.
First off DL, IS VERY IMPORTANT.... Secondly, I might take the Jets FB over that gun slinging QB they lineup every Sunday.
