Jets are looking for a long term deal: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/02/20/pouha-not-expected-to-be-tagged/related/
true, no one is worth it! I just see other teams doing it to get something out of the players that other teams want but we dont have players like that.
This is kind of concerning to me because, while Pouha has been an indispensable piece of this team’s defense, he’s now 33 years old. Hearing reports that the Jets are looking for a long-term contract are concerning because let’s say we get him signed to a 4 year deal, are we really going to want a 37-year old nose tackle that we’re locked into? I don't think so.
I don’t think we need Pouha for more than a year, but maybe 2 max. We have Kenrick Ellis waiting for his opportunity. A true offseason and another year in the system will help Ellis show what he has to offer. If after next year he’s still a question mark, or worse he’s a bust, we can look into acquiring someone through free agency.
The way I read this is that Tanny is already planning on spending the money from the new TV deal that won't hit the cap until 2014 (I think). Sure, he may not be very useful at 36/37, but Tanny is willing to take that risk to keep him now. If Tanny is still around at that point, he'll deal with it then.
Pouha was drafted at 28 so while he is 33 and can't rejuvenate as fast as a younger man can, he doesn't have a lot of mileage on him. Not concerned about this. There are plenty of mid to late 30 somethings in the NFL that can still produce.
I don't know why. I haven't seen anything in the media that suggests they don't want to sign him, just that they want to sign him long-term and not use the franchise tag.
Its odd, I guess they dont want to guarantee him the full amount he would be owed. But I think it makes the most sense because at 33 I think it would be smart for the Jets to take it on a year to year basis. I'm not disappointed by it, I agree that its not a necessity to tag anyone
The can't afford to tag him without moving a bunch of money around. That's why they don't want to do it.
We cant afford to give Pouha big cash, hopefully his age is a massive determent for other teams. And fortunately it helps us that Miamis NT Solai I believe is on the open market and they have no interest in signing him. So that at least takes the highest bidder off the table for Pouha
And I agree there is nobody on this team worth tagging at this time. Literally not a single person even worth recommending to use it on, Pouha would be the only candidate, and it would cost WAY too much fucking money. Instead of tagging him we would be significantly better off just giving Solali a monster contract
I feel like I remember hearing that Pouha's body is younger for some reason. Not sure what the reason was. In any case, bring him back. Solid player, great leader.
