Armed with 13 picks -- including a total of seven selections in Rounds 2 through 5 -- the San Francisco 49ers could be the wild card of the 2013 NFL Draft.
One general manager told Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports that he believes the 49ers are interested in trading up from No. 31 overall to the 13th or 14th spot.

This might be little more than dot-connecting, as the 49ers simply don't have the roster space for more than a half-dozen rookies. As one of a handful of NFL teams currently enjoying a wide-open Super Bowl window, it makes sense to leverage the extra picks for a difference-maker or two to help put the 49ers over the top.

Around The League's Marc Sessler suggested talented West Virginia playmaker Tavon Austin could be in the 49ers' sights, as coach Jim Harbaugh has been at a high number of wide receiver workouts.

The talk around the NFL, according to Cole, is that 49ers general manager Trent Baalke would like to get a defensive lineman who eventually can step in for 33-year-old Justin Smith. NFL.com's Daniel Jeremiah believes Utah defensive tackle Star Lotulelei could be a target if he slides out of the top 10 Thursday night.

With so many teams interested in trading down, it's a buyers' market for the 49ers.

whats the chart say it would take to go from 31 to 13?

    it's got to be alot.

if we could end up with a bunch of picks in rounds 2-3 it might be worth it

I think it would take a good deal of picks to go from the 31 to the 13. I'm not sure what the value chart indicates, but I could dig the 31 (Okafor?).

Draft trade charts are all over the place, just search for it. Not sure what the difference from last year to this is, but doesn't seem much. Used a 2013 NFL trade value chart for the numbers.

Big value is the top three, once your past #8 the value is pretty low and starts dropping by only 50 pooints a pick.

    #1 = 3000
    #2 = 2600
    #3 = 2200
    #4 = 1800
    #5 = 1700
    #6 = 1600
    #7 = 1500
    #8 = 1400
    #9 = 1350

Would you guys do this come draft day?

Both the Vikings and 49ers are interested in moving up, least that's what's been reported.

Would you trade out of the #9 to acquire the #23 and #25 draft picks of the Vikings?

Then at #13, we trade out and acquire the #31 and #34 picks of the 49ers.

Of course, this is all hinges on a player falling that would interest both of those teams. If all this occurred, we'd have #23, #25, #31, #34, and #39 picks to jump start the rebuild.

I don't think anybody would be against it, but I doubt we would be able to get those deals done. Trades are not that easy or everyone would do it.

    Agreed.

But I can see one of those deals getting done, though. Both is unrealistic to expect.

I'd see who was available at both picks before moving. I'm not trading out of the 9 if Dion Jordan is there and probably not out of the 13 if Jarvis Jones or Star Lotulelei is available, unless I got Jordan on the 9 in which case I might.

This isnt going to happen, the Vikings have already stated they arent trading both #23 and #25 to move up. And i doubt the 49ers make a move up that high either, deals like this would be made all the time, but these are highly unlikely.

To come up to 13 I'd ask for their 1,2,2,4,6,7

they'd still have what 3,3,4,5,6,7,7 something like that

I think the trade might happen if Star fell to our #9 pick and we traded with the 49ers. I think Star might be one of the players they're targeting.

The draft pick trading process is pretty standardized. The 13 is worth their 31 and 34. That really is how it works. If the Jets see a special player at 13 then trading down is not a tasty proposition. If they don't then getting the two picks for one is probably the way to go.

The 49ers might actually ask for a 7th back on the deal also to even it out on the charts and I think it's very appropriate in that situation for the Jets to say "no thanks, we're only doing this to turn one pick into two."

I think I would want more than just a 31 and a 34, the reason being that at the 13 you can get a player who is a pretty sure bet. Especially I would not pass up Cooper, Lotulelei or Austin. With the 31 and 34 picks, you get a couple of question marks. With the rookie pay scale for high picks being lower under the new CBA, it no longer pays to trade down.

Just to play Devil's Advocate, but of course they're going to say that. Just like the 49ers said they weren't going to trade Alex Smith, and the Jets about Revis, and the Vikings about Harvin...

no team admits they're looking to, or are going to, do something like that because they lose all leverage

Also, where did you see that they said that? I haven't seen that (not saying you're wrong, or they haven't said it, just that I haven't seen it)

That's not really true. Just last year, the 31 was Doug Martin and 34 was Coby Fleener.

If this trade were to happen, I would hope that Jamar Taylor would still be available and a potential pick for the Jets

And something that would probably be very unpopular on this board, but they could use one of those picks on a QB (nassib, manuel, etc)
