    Robert Ayers, DE, Tennessee

Not many Jet fans have considered Ayers.......maybe they should take a second look.

Ayers was probably one of the best defensive players in College football in 2008. There is no question 2008 was his break-out year. Injuries have plagued his career with the Vols.

Let's think of what Rex is looking for in a defensive player.........VERSATILITY.

Ayers can play the 5 technique, can move inside and even play outside rush LB.

I understand everyone is screaming for a WR, RB, QB...in Rd 1, but if a player like Ayers is available, he must be considered. There will be very good players in rd 2 & 3......Robiskie, Shonn Greene..etc.

I really like Ayers, I figured that he'd probably be gone by pick 17. He's definitely on my short list of players in round 1.

Very good point WW, I could certainly see Ayers as the pick there. Do you think he'll be able to play the 5 technique though? He's a bit light for it. I'm not too well informed about Ayers as a player, so I'm a bit in the dark about his ability.

mayock took a leap of faith and called him the best defensive player in the draft when its all said and done. that's a bold statement.

i'm hoping his senior year is what teams are getting, and not the previous ones.

Ayers' has one huge question mark though: is he a one year wonder?

His versatility is great though - he has the size to play LB and DE in the 3-4.

    No doubt!!

I think his weight is fine.... 275 range, with room to add some. He's a little smaller than I would like, only 6' 3", but it isn't that big of a deal. He can definitely play the 3-4 DE position, but I like the ability for him to move around.

He's a little risk (not like VG, since Ayer's is a versatile player), since he only had 1 great year, like I mentioned earlier, injuries slowed him down.

he is a good pick i would agree... its just i think this draft we just dont know what direction we are gonna go in... theres no consistent mocks... they have qb wr rb dl cb shoot to many to pick and we in the long run just want the best value at number one a guy who is gonna produce straight off the bat.. so we got our work cut out and the FO is scrambling right now since theres only one week left

Tank............I truly believe Tanny doesn't know who he's going to select at #17......the board has to come to him.

My 1st rd targets at #17.............Moreno, Jenkins, Ayers & Pettigrew.

IF we take a defensive player in rd1 I think Ayers is the only one I'd be ok with (in our possible range of course). It would be a good pick because he would be able to study under Ellis for a year and gain some weight...

Jenkins could be the BAP at #17. I'll take the BAP available and Jenkins could be that player. He could play either and would be a solid addition to the defense.

    Moreno.....people undervalue his ability.

Pettigrew.....not a popular choice, but could be a possibilty. I'd rather go TE later.

I was just throwing out some possible option at 17.

I wouldn't rule out Tyson Jackson either, although he likely will not be there.
Comparisons to Warren on NE don't seem too far fetched.

My top 3 choices right now are Maclin, Jackson, then trade back.
I don't see a huge difference between Moreno and Donald Brown.

i was sleeping on Ayers a little though. good post.
