Ravens won't take DGB. Ozzie has stated he will not take anyone with major character flaws in the draft. Also why take a 2nd RB if we trade up for Gurley? Much rather see an ILB or FS there. But if this is how our draft went, I would think we would all be completely ecstatic. Although it would be tough for me to see the Jets trade down with Fowler still on board being that he's my number 1 player for us
There is a better shot of Flowers going in the top-10 than there is of him making it past 20. In terms of the Jets draft itself, I'm not crazy about it. First, trade downs are always unrealistic and difficult to predict, but I'll put that aside. I'm not nearly as big a fan of Ray as I am of Fowler. I went with Fowler in my draft because he's far and away the BPA (in my opinion of course). At the 13, I'd probably take Ereck Flowers. Our OL is going to look real ugly in a few years unless we start rebuilding it now. I also don't like trading back up for a RB, and it makes even less sense to acquire a second RB after trading up for one. That would mean we used three picks on this draft on RBs, which has become such an interchangeable position.
Flowers looked really stiff at the combine I am not a fan. I think Ogbuehi will end up as good or better in the pros. Even if Flowers is the better player the value is just not there in the top half of round one.
I could wind up loving or hating that draft primarily because of what you do in the 1st round. Trading down to get Shane Ray and passing up White, Fowler, Collins and Parker would not make me happy unless Ray winds up being a lot better than I think he will be in the NFL. Ray was very productive in college, but I'm not sure he has the size or speed to be that productive in the NFL. If the Jets want to take an OLB, why not stay put and take Fowler? I like the aspect of picking up additional picks, however, and Ray could surprise me. I like Gurley a lot, and although I don't know much about Ogbuehi, I like what I have heard, and agree that OT is a HUGE need in the draft. I like Agholor and Johnson, but why do the Jets need to take two RBs? I know Orakpo's older brother has been a great OLB for Washington, but haven't heard a lot about him. I really like the Varga pick. So there are some things I really like, others I don't like as much, and there is some potential there for it to be better than it looks on first impression. Interesting.
In that mock, I'd rather sit tight in the first, take Kevin White, then take Jake Fisher or Nate Orchard in the 2nd. Really not a big fan of Cedric Ogbuehi.
It is easy to make a wise pick at #6. To get a steal you have to pick a little lower. Also trading down for picks makes up for the planned move to burn our third rounder moving up for Gurley. Staying put and taking Fowler / Beasley at 6 would work but I would still trade up for Gurley and take another RB in round four (unless someone else fell that should have gone much, much earlier.
http://overthecap.com/draft/ Cap impact of trades is as follows: Traded away Pick 6 $3,002,182 Pick 37 $970,442 Pick 70 $602,813 Total $4,575,437 Aquired Pick 13 $1,858,000 Pick 22 $1,514,745 Pick 58 $676,224 Pick 90 $570,880 Total $4,659,849 Although the draft picks we acquired cost $84,412 more we have added a player through the draft which knocks off at least $529,670 as one more player is knocked out of the top 51. Cap savings of the trades is at least $450K.
I really like the pick of Agholor. I think he will be a great receiver in the pro's. Not really liking the ray pick as he is kinda light. I think Fowler is a much better player. But all in all a very good mock.
I missed the trade up. I would not like that at all. There are too many good RBs in this draft to fall in love with one and burn a pick trading up. For certain, the Jets don't need to take two RBs. That wastes another pick. I like this even less now. Also, you make it sound as if the purpose of the draft is to get steals. It isn't. It's great when you get one, but that shouldn't be your primary motivation. Nor is the purpose of the draft to save cap space. You sure do look at things from a "different" perspective.
That's 2016. There are good RBs in every draft and RB is the easiest position in which for a rookie to start. When we have other needs, like ILB and TE, taking a second RB for 2016 would be silly imo. You'd have to cut another player that could help you this year in order to save that RB for next year. Makes little or no sense.
This is probably the best RB draft ever. Passing up a RB this year would be like passing up a WR last year. How did that work out for us?
I'd say pretty well since we have Marshall and a chance to get another topflight WR this year. You don't draft a year ahead for a player you won't use, when you'd have to cut a player you can use in order to keep the other. Makes zero sense. RBs don't have the importance they once did in the NFL, and there are very good RBs in the draft every year. It means little that this may be the best RB class ever.
If you are targeting those two players I personally would swap Agholor and Ogbuehi. Agholor has got the best run-after-catch in the draft. He has that extra kick in his step... like he runs angry and I think he is a lock for the second round. He is also a very effective return man. JMO.
Trading down would be a good idea in this draft so that the Jets can hopefully fill multiple needs in the first round. Ray is a prospect I liked a lot at first, but now I'm not sure what type of player he will turn into. He has a great motor, but he doesn't seem to possess many pass rushing and wins primarily with speed. Gurley has the potential to be a top RB in the NFL if he can stay healthy, so I don't have a problem with him being the target of a trade. Ogbuehi is a pretty good RT prospect, but he looked extremely uncomfortable at LT this year before he was injured. I like the Agholar and Johnson picks, but I don't think the Jets would double up on RBs in the draft. I like the Varga pick because he has the ability to play both FB and some RB at the next level.
Oh... Even if that were true which is very doubtful that it is.. not sure taking a RB coming off an ACL injury in the first round would be a very good idea.. If the draft is so great there would be other options.
