Very good year to pick-up a nose tackle. I'll be very pissed if we don't address NT!!!!! Some possibilities for Gang Green. Some of these players could swing out and play DE occasionally. There are more NTs available, like Jay Ross & Demarcus Granger (injuries and other issues), the ones listed below I like the best in order. IMO, the top 2 are must targets......I will settle for Boo Robinson too!! Terrence Cody, Bama...6'5" 360+.....A top 15 player. Dan Williams, Tenn....6'3" 330....could rise to mid/late Rd1 come April. Boo Robinson, Wake...6'2" 310....solid player if we can't get Cody and Williams, Rd2/3. Kade Weston, Georgia, 6'5" 325...I've seen Weston makes some plays, good size Rd4/5 Al Wilson, LSU.....6'4" 325...Injuries held Wilson back, should be higher rated. Was suppose to take over for Dorsey, never produced. Rd5/6 Torrell Troup, Central Florida....6'3" 315...makes some plays in the backfield. Rd5/6
As much as I like the idea of Cody, I'm against drafting him in the 1st. The more I think about it, the more I think that Cody will eat himself out of the league. I mean, he's young and his metabolism is the highest it's ever going to be. He's working his heart out to lose weight and gain endurance in order to make millions of dollars, yet he still plays in less than 50% of Bama's plays. What happens when he has his millions and doesn't live on a school campus where everyone is behind you and the team? I'd rather have a guy who has much better muscle/weight efficiency: someone who gets a lot of power, speed, and endurance out of their body, even if it's smaller than Cody's. A few years of working out in the NFL, and you're going to get bigger. I've seen bits and pieces of Cody. Hoping to catch the entire Bama/Florida game this weekend. Quick question. Out of these guys listed, who do you think is the fastest or plays the fastest?
Don't worry about Mount Cody's weight. He was around 385-290 when he enrolled at Alabama. Now, he's 365 and plans to lose about 15 to 20 more pounds in the off-season. The kid loves the game of football and he wants to get better, that's why I like him so much. He worked his ass off at a JUCO to make the grades to play major college ball. If he showed no signs of wanted to better himself, then I'd say stay away, but he wants to be the strongest and most dominant player on the field. He wants it. Who cares who the fastest nose tackle is? It's not their job to be fast. Take the "s" out and you may be on to something.
To play devils advocate, how does a guy like Pouha compare to these prospects? He's about the same size and I think was a pretty productive player in college. My point is is it worth it to draft a guy who has the size in the mid rounds just for the sake of drafting size?
Sione Pouha is almost 31 years old...Pouha is actually older than Kris Jenkins. He's a nice rotational player to have, but we need a long term option at NT. It's not necessarily about drafting size. It's about drafting a dominant force for the middle of our 3-4 line. Size is just a requirement for the position.
Agreed 100%. My point is, look at the top nose tackles in the league (in no particular order) and when they were drafted: Casey Hampton: 1st round Kris Jenkins: 2nd round Jamal Williams: 2nd round Vince Wilfork: 1st round There have been a few guys like Jason Ferguson and Jay Ratliff who have become solid players drafted later, but if you're looking to add a guy that is going to be a "force" and not someone who is just going to be a rotational depth player, I think it's going to have to be a top pick.
Like WW and I have been saying this thread: The Jets have to get one of the top three NTs in this year's class. Terrence Cody, Dan Williams, and Boo Robinson.
This an article from ESPN, they think that Cody is "most likely a mid-second-round pick." If he were to fall to the Jets in the second, I think I'd cry tears of joy. Alabama DT Terrence Cody (6-3⅝, 373); Grade: 88 -- Cody has had a better overall year than he did in 2008, and the Tide are keeping him fresh by limiting his snaps in passing situations. It will be interesting to see how much Cody is on the field on third-and-less than 4 on Saturday, because those are the situations in which Florida QB Tim Tebow usually gashes a defense with quarterback draws and the speed option. Too many snaps early in the game could render Cody useless in the fourth quarter when Alabama needs him most. That's a big part of the concerns for NFL teams as well, whether a two-down nose tackle with stamina issues and weight concerns is worth a late first-round pick. Some team might reach for him there, but in our book, he is too much of a risk to eat himself out of the league or simply fall short because of weight issues. Cody is most likely a mid-second-round pick. http://insider.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?entryID=4705938&name=nfl_draft
Unless he gets injured or sucks complete balls at the combine, Mount Cody should be a first round pick. More and more teams are switching to the 3-4 and nose tackles are rare.
That is pretty much how I feel about Cody right now. I do think there will be a team desperate enough for a NT that they take a chance in the first though. Depending on how Jenkins recovers will determine if we are one of those desperate teams. I hope we're not.
Jenkins had stamina issues and weight concerns. Then Tanny put a bunch of weight clauses in his contract, and Jenkins' weight issues were gone. He'll do the same with this kid, and he can be the next Jenkins. I find it interesting that he's a late pick. Maybe those motor and weight issues knock him back that far. In that case, trade the fuck back and pick up picks in the 2nd round. I want 8 picks in this draft. not 4.
Mount Cody was pretty much in beast mode the entire game. Saban sent him out as a fullback on a couple of plays inside the five, one which led to a Mark Ingram score.
