Ive been thinking a lot about this #16 Pick, it could possibly be a blessing in disguise. Now this is a bit of a "best case scenario" type deal, having all these players available. Although I think its not completely insane to think it couldn't happen. So here we go, these three kids are available who do you pick if you HAD to choose for the Jets? These three positions are clearly our biggest needs, all picks can fit on this team well, and you can make a case for each one. Benefits of picking Courtney Upshaw- frankly the best 34 OLB in the draft IMO, he can get to the QB, stop the run, is as NFL ready as you can be, has excellent size and speed, etc. Jets fans have been begging for a pass rusher for so long, this could change things big time for the D and for our secondary. Benefits of picking Michael Floyd- the #3 WR in this draft after Blackmon and Jeffery, has great size, hands, body control, and has played in a pro style offense. We will need a #2 WR next year and we need more youth on this team, Plax maybe not be back and if we dont want to give another WR a big contract we may need to draft a WR for Mark. Why not a kid as dynamic as Floyd? Benefits of picking Jonathan Martin- you have seen Wayne Hunter, that maybe argument enough but ill keep going. To help Mark Sanchez stay upright and make our offense that much better for the next 5 to 8 years. Martin is a great prospect out of Stanford who is seen more as a LT but can certainly play RT. He is extremely intelligent, has excellent hands, great strength, and Id consider him to be a very solid athlete. If he is there he would be pretty hard to pass up.
I'd rather get a veteran O-Linemen so that takes out Martin Between Upshaw and Floyd I think we cant miss with either. If we pick Upshaw we can grab Sanu in the 2nd and pair him with a legit vet as our #1 since its likely Burress and Holmes may be gone If we pick Floyd we can grab Curry in the 2nd and let him play the role Aldon Smith did last year
Vinny Curry is not Aldon Smith. There's a reason he was a top 10 pick last year... And I honestly dont know who you expect to pick up in FA that will actually help this franchise... If I had to guess it may be Levi Brown, but other than him, the FA's are old and passed their prime. I voted for Martin because the OL needs to improve. We have a good amount of wholes and its hard to rank which one is of higher need. Theyll probably go BPA here, if this is the case, and base the pick on who they have ranked higher.
I agree with you they would go who ever is higher on their board for sure. I voted Martin myself because I think suring up the line is the best thing for our offense. Martin would be a future starter for years to come and that means Sanchez stays upright, non rattled , and on to play consistently. No WR or even RB can help this offense unless there is a solidified line. But i will say this any one these picks I'd be thrilled with.
Like laninx57 said I doubt Curry could be anywhere near as effective as Aldon. Now if you are taking about a 3rd down only pass rusher. I thinly that woildnt be smart to do that to Curry. We want to draft a future starter and I think its best to ease him in on most downs back and forth with Westerman and Maybin. That way he learns the ins and outs of standing, playing zone, and stopping the run. I know we don't neccessarily need that immediately but I think it sets him up better for the future. The only vet OLineman I'd take is Kareem McKenzie and he wont look much better than Hunter unfortunately. Bell from the bills should get a huge contract. I dont see any starter worthy. I would love getting Upshaw and Sanu 1st and 2nd that'd be a dream. It certainly would be harf though, wed have to hope there isn't a run on Wideouts.
Voted for upshaw but for me it's real close between him and Floyd. Floyd would bring so much to our offense; downfield speed, big bodied deep threat, and a tremendous run blocker.
I'm not voting, because I can honestly say that any of the three would leave me smiling on draft day.
Hes one hell of a prospect and I think very NFL ready. The spot we are in leaves us in a great spot to pick up a player of Floyds caliber. Although, I have this strange feeling a prospect will fall to us that looked like they shouldnt or wouldnt be there prior. Someone like Richardson, Jeffery, or more than likely Burfict. All of which are prolific prospects who could really bring a boost to this team. Anything could happen on draft day.
Im glad I made the poll a hard one to vote on. I think its definitely a scenario we will run into. And that's the greatest part, all would be nowhere near disappointing, something I left felling after last years draft to be perfectly honest.
I was happy last year. we Addressed adding youth to the D line in a big way. No it was not flashy but very necessary.
I agree, maybe it was my bias into wanting Akeem Ayers on this team so bad. He's quietly having a good season as a rookie starter for the Titans with 76 tackles, 2 sacks, and 2 forced fumbles. Anyway I think that drafting a RB wasnt the right move. I like Powell a lot but Id rather not spend a pick unless its in the 7th on a kid who is inactive all year. I understand hindsight is 20/20 but I was hyping up getting Denarius Moore all pre draft. I wanted him so badly as a slot WR. Now Kerley is great, he is a nice young wideout BUT Moore has big time potential and is a big time home run threat. We skipped him for Powell. Also, getting Scotty Mcknight was just silly. We knew he wasnt going to be any better than a practice squad player. We could of easily signed him as a UDFA. I was begging for Joe Lefeged as were many others, he showed great signs of being a solid prospects with the Colts. He would of been perfect to bring in, local (Played at Rutgers), great value, and we had a need at Safety. I hope I dont look back at 2012's draft a have to say the same thing.
We can't afford to at all. If this team wants to win now, and still be a playoff contender, this draft needs to be great all around. The first 4 picks need to be players than can make an immediate impact. Im just kind of sick of luxury picks like Ducasse in 2010, Kenric Ellisn(just because he was inactive half of the season), Bilal Powell and Scotty McKnight in this years draft. I really would have liked to see more of Kenric Ellis and the small amount of time he played, he seemed promising. I just really think we need to get more out our draft picks, especially this year. On a brighter note, I really think a scenario like this (or something similar) could play out and I would be extremely happy with any of these 3.
Why are guys so down on Vinny Curry and I didn't say he was comparable to Aldon Smith I said play the role he plays. Work on his skills througout the season, let him strictly rush the passer and develop him into a starter if we go with a WR or T in the 1st Round thats all I said. Honestly how many day 1 starters 3-4 OLB are there in the draft, Courtney Upshaw, thats all I see, so if he's gone we have to get a guy we can develop. Curry has all the tools to be great and in the 2nd round thats great value.
WW85, Johnny or anyone... is there a player that has the freakish ability/potential that we've seen from JPP, Aldon Smith, or Von Miller? Upshaw seems like a very good all around prospect, but not a dominant passrusher. Mercilus would be the one I would guess although he doesnt have elite athleticism like the 3 above do.
I don't think anyone in the top of this draft is that type of athletic freak. There are a lot of very good options but none that looks to be of great status.
I would say the most freakish athletic player is Jarvis Jones, but he is heading back to UGA. Other than the guys you mentioned I would say that Nick Perry is a pretty solid athlete
I would say Brandon Jenkins of Florida state has the freak athelte type game where he really relies on his speed and initial burst off the line. Right now he is losing stock since he is seen as a one trick pony and hasn't shown impressive pass rush moves. I will say this though , he will definitely impress at the combine. I'd personally love to get him in the 2nd.
Thats the thing, there are a lot of solid guys. Perry, Ingram, Mercilus, Upshaw, and Jenkins are all good/solid athletes. None of them are going to be confused with being the next Julius Peppers or JPP though. Its a good year to adress OLB because of the depth there. Not a great year if your looking for the next Derrick Thomas. Then again thats the reason none of these guys are rated in the top 10 for the most part.
He's really a one trick pony ATM. A Bigger version of Maybin and lacks elite power to make him a huge threat. He's got good speed and a good first step, but can be washed by the play and does not really use a rip or swim to keep tackles off balance. Good potential, not an out the gate monster though.
