Possible Draft Choices

2nd round - lamarr woodley
2nd round (if it isn't traded) - eric weddle


how does it sound?

 

The jets are supposedly really interested in Brian Leonard RB/FB Rutgers.

 

1st - Anthony Spencer
2nd - Jamaal Anderson
2nd - Daymeion Hughes

??

 

Not so good. Here are the reasons (a) quinn pitcock will not be able to play the 3-4 nose at 295 lbs. He may be able to play the 3-4 end position effectively, (b) lamarr woodley has been projected to be taken somewhere between #3 overall and #26 overall. The chances of him lasting are small. (c) eric weddle would be a great pick at this point in the draft but (1) can he play CB in the NFL? and (2) will he be available at nearly 50-something in the draft?

Here are my suggestions:

1: Justin Blalock (versatile, tough O-lineman); OR Adam Carriker (3-4 end for 10 years)
2a: Amboi Okoye (large, young NT that can absorb double teams); OR Anthony Spencer (OLB that can rush the passer); OR Kenny Irons (versatile RB); OR Michael Bush (bruising RB)
2b: one of the previously mentioned players; OR Dan Bazuin (OLB with great intangibles); OR Tony Hunt (RB that will be an effective north-south runner in the NFL)

There are other potential picks so post them up............

 

Marshawn Lynch....Ben Grubbs....Michael Bush.....Kenny Irons.....Tony Hunt.....AP....Lamarr Woodley.....

I think we have a few positions we have to upgrade this offseason:

Defensive side of the ball:
1) Nose tackle (switch Robertson to right end and then either get rid of Kimo or keep him in the rotation).
2) Defensive end (even if the above were to happen the Jets should still look to draft another end. As the Pats have shown, if you can dominate with the defensive line it makes everything easier for the rest of the team. )
3) OLB- While not as important as the lineman, getting someone who can rush the passer from the weak side and beat someone one on one would prevent the jets from having to blitz and they could keep 7 keeps in coverage.
4) CB- take someone midrounds that Mangini can coach up. No reason to take someone that high. We don't need have the best athlete just a player who can do what's asked.

Offensive side of the ball:
1) Right Guard- we need a big physical mauler at this spot. I would look for this to be a priority for the offseason.
2) Right Tackle- Clement has done a nice job, especially in pass blocking, but he's not a good run blocker. I think they will draft a tackle mid rounds that they can coach up.
3) Running back- If they can improve the line then the running back position is that much better to begin with. I don't think this team is ready to take a running back in the first round but they will have to bring in another back to replace Barlow.
4) Tight end- I think most people are happy with Baker, he's an average tight end, does some nice things. One of the things you notice with the Pats is that they seem to have Watson and Graham on the field all the time. This causes serious match up problems, not only are these guys fast but they can also block and catch the ball. Belicheck has drafted 2 tight ends in the first round and one in the 3rd (Dave Thomas) I fully expect in the near future that Mangini will want another tight end to improve the line and give them further passing options.

So my question is how many of these positions can be filled in the draft this year?

 

I don't like the idea of drafting a rookie CB. That wouldn't help us. I'd much rather prefer an immediate contributor like an Assante Samuel or Nate Clements for example.

 

I don't think they should spend any money on a free agent cornerback. Mangini is a secondary coach he should be able to draft a guy in the 4th round and in a year or two turn him into a solid starter. It's amazing how when we get pressure no one bitches about the secondary.

 

I think Okoye will vault up to the 1st rnd. He wont start right away but remember he is 20 years old and had only played that amount of years on one hand.
remember it is still early anything can happen PS who the hell was John McCargo before last years draft?
every year someone gets picked way out of position and others fall...also who was the CB/S that Atlanta selected last yr in the 2nd rnd from Virginia Tech. alot of people thought he should have been the 1st corner taken

Who knows with Okoye he could go the other way like 6th rnd.

We are still early in the process.
We havent had the Sr bowl yet, combines, individual workouts, and personal issues(like who is partying with Paris Hilton) or who will get pulled over with a gun. And FA and cuts have a part in it also.
Still 4 months to rise or fall

Samuel is a little overated. I live in NE area and Samuel doesnt play the #1 WR most of the time.... its Hobbs
during that game Samuel got an INT covering Coles but Hobbs played Coles 60% of the time. But maybe thats the Bellichick style because Jets dont have a #1 CB they are all over the palce. even when Law was around with NE he was just on the #1 WR about 60% of the time.
Though Samuel knows their system.
There is another problem every team is about 20 mil under the cap I think Samuel is going to get the highest contract and signing bonus ever for a CB. Mangini wont go that far to get him.

 

I really hope we don't buy into Leonard and draft him with one of our second rounders. It was obvious in the game today that we need more playmakers on defense so we don't have to send in all out blitzes and big guards on the OL. I hate seeing us get pushed around. I don't believe Leonard would have made any difference in that game today while one of the other players I mentioned would have.

 

Jimmy Williams was the CB/S from Virginia Tech.

I will guarantee right now that Okoye will be in the first round and as of now, I would say he will be long gone by our pick (pending combine and pro day results). From what I have seen he is hands down the best nose tackle in the draft. I personally think he is better at DT than Branch but I think I might be the only one. Also due to his youth and potential, someone will take a flier on him. I see no reason he can't be the next Casey Hampton or Jamal Williams in a couple years.

 

I agree with Rambo totally, Okoye would be my #1 rated DT if I had to choose one. Plus, a 19 year old NT, with his kind of size/athleticism combo is not easy to find. Might take a year or two, but he's a bonafide star in the making.

 

If I had to guess I would say he's a good bet to go to Atlanta now.
