We all know that the starters on the line this year will be Mo, Snacks, and Richardson. It's hard to argue any different but let's look at a different perspective. Kenrick Ellis played very well last year when given the opportunity and proved to be a viable run stopper. He also showed the ability to apply pressure on the QB in passing scenarios. Do you think we could see a 4 man front on early downs that includes Ellis and snacks on the inside? Moreover, do you believe this could be effective? Would we have to drop a safety or a LB? I think this combination could be very effective on obvious run downs as well as short conversion plays, especially if our safety play improves. EDIT: This proposed personnel grouping is not meant to replace Rex's base 3-4.
I just don't recall seeing much of Harrison and Ellis on the field at the same time last year. I think that could be deadly. Let Richardson and Wilk run free occasionally.
Well no need to worry about it, if Rex thinks having Harrison and Ellis out there at the same time is the best thing for the defense he'll do it. You really have to defer to Rex on this matter, us suggesting what defensive packages should be used would be like elementary school students who just learned their multiplication tables offering mathematical suggestions to a calculus teacher.
I'm not suggesting or worried about anything, it's all speculation at this point. I was just wondering what people on the message board think. Do you think it'd be a viable option... Why or why not?
Lol I wouldn't call that serviceable. Although I guess a lambo has the power to do so... He hasn't had much experience in coverage but he has improved since making the switch to the position. I'd say more serviceable than what we have in reserve.
I'm not saying he's not serviceable in that area, just that his other skills are near elite. He should be in a role where he can rush the passer as much as possible, so I wouldn't worry about not having him in coverage when that happens.
The only time I'd want to see Harrison and Ellis out there at the same time is for short yardage and goal line sets. And no, Coples is not a coverage linebacker.
We ran 4-3 plenty of times last year - but I wouldn't put Ellis and Snacks on the line at the same time. Maybe a goal-line stand in a 5-2 defense or goal-line defense
I for one do NOT want to see Harrison and Ellis together at the line. No. I don't want that. I'd rather prefer to keep one fresh while the other is fielding the NT spot. That way the DL remains effective deep into 4th quarter.
Somebody brings this up almost every off season. Rex is going to keep switching it up. Some plays we'll see 4 up front, some we'll see 3. It's going to be fun watching teams try to figure it out. There's a LOT of talent up there. The only thing that worries me is that I don't see us possibly being able to retain them all for long as they will command more money.
Which is exactly why you don't overdraft a certain position. Three 1st rounders on the DLine will overload the salary balance for the team if they all perform well. Now throw in a wildcard UDFA Harrison who could go to the pro bowl and you do have a fiscal dilemma. Moving Coples to LB solves a little. This is what Idzik was brought in to handle.
As for Ellis, I expect Coples will be in on more plays than him. And I doubt we see much of Ellis and Harrison at the same time. Some, maybe.
