According to the blogs from this mornings press conference, Monsanto Pope has left camp for personal reasons (bye-bye). In addition, Phil Silva and D.J. Fitzpatrick have been released. Also noticed that Pouha and Colman won't be practicing this afternoon. I wonder what the severity of Pouha's injury is, especially with Pope no longer with the team. Need more bodies to play that middle of the defense.... http://weblogs.newsday.com/sports/football/jets/blog/ http://blogs.nydailynews.com/jets/
Yeah, you get the feeling they will be watching the waiver wires closely for interior help. Also noticed this in Berger's blog Lastly, the players are not scheduled for a day off -- ever. This Sunday had been an open date on the schedule distributed to the media, but it has been confirmed that the team will have a second practice at Giants Stadium -- closed to the public -- that day. "When we get to the point where we've made the progress that we need to make, then we?ll have a day off," Mangini said. You can be sure Mangini has gotten the players attention by now. I just hope we don't start hearing the crying we heard during Al Groh's grueling practices. It's a fine line you have to walk as a coach, but there is no denying who is in charge....
No surprise about Fitzpatrick...he probably wanted to go home as soon as he saw Graham warming up. As for Silva, the only thing I heard about him was that he got laid out by Hobson...must suck being sent home so early though, didn;t even get a scrimmage or preseason game. Don't like hearing that about Pope but does it mean that he is not on the team or that he had to attend to something serious and was allowed to leave?
The Pope departure isn't all-too surprising. I wasn't even remotely thrilled with this pick as I have been with others in the past (see D. McGlover for ST). However, it's a loss of a fattie, and we definitely need some more depth, especially since Pouha's already limping a little. What's Chester doing nowadays?
Well Cimini makes it look like he quit but the other blog just says he left for personal reasons...I wanna hear Mangini explain it.....and if it was because of the long practices that guys a pussy.....and we should be happy he's no longer aorund because he doesn;t have a true passion for the game...
Cimini: Anyway, let’s get to a couple of news nuggets: DT Monsanto Pope is a goner. Pope, an unrestricted free agent from the Broncos, left camp. “Personal reasons," Mangini told us, declining to elaborate. Gee, wonder if Mangini’s 2 ½-hours practices in the blistering heat had something to do with his decision. Obviously, this isn’t going to cripple the defense, but Pope, a versatile lineman, was considered a pretty good bet to make the team. Berger: * Defensive lineman Monsanto Pope has left camp for "personal reasons." I'd hate to speculate publicly on what they are, because football players are people with families and problems like the rest of us. But I will say that Mangini's camp is not for everybody.
You can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. At the end of camp and pre-season there will be a full squad of MEN left standing. Let the boys and posers fall by the wayside. I suspect this won't be the last.
Well, if he just got up and quit then, aw poor baby. This is a big boy sport, if you can't hang, get out early I reckon. Maybe he thought it was going to be all sunshine and lollipops like last years Herm's boy scout camp.
Let us not forget Tui Alailafuela.....the 350 pounder doesn't seem to be bitching about the long hot practices
I realize this is Mangini's first camp and he has to establish himself as firmly in control but sooner or later he will have to take the pedal off the metal. Otherwise, half the team will end up injured and worn down by Week 8. With the NFL season a long demanding grind it will become a testament to his ability when he realizes it is time to let up a bit. He has to earn the respect of the players and so far it looks like he has their attention at least. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.
