M. Bernstein is a stud blocking FB from Wisconsin. 275lb FB that blocks like a truck - he also has decent cathing and running skills. He had an injury in college, which dropped his stock. PS. I am a bit biased, since he went to my High School. Can you imagine Mangold/Ferguson/Bernstein/Kendall smashing holes, will rip right thru the center of the Pats defense. Almost every great RB has had a bruising FB (and blocking TE) to lead the way for them (Jim Brown, Tomlinson, Holmes, J. Morris, W. Payton, etc, etc).
Yeah it was Vickers, who I believe got picked-up. But Bernstein is a 100x better blocking fullback. He pretty much opened holes for Calhoun all day.
Yeah. The Football team really took off after I graduated - bunch of jewish and asian kids winning the NY state title - was pretty amusing to watch. Bernstein was the pride of that generation. Also has the intangibles Mangini is looking for - smart/head on straight/tough/etc.
I would not have minded us taking him in the fifth or later..shit he would have been a better pick then Eric Smith for F'n sakes.
I love the way Bernstein played but for some reason he has not been picked up so the scouts know more about his back problems then we do.
I am not sure what the status of his injury is, but I suspect he is going to try out for the JETS squad as a walk-on. I hope they give him a serious look, because he could definately be used on Goal-Line (even Special Teams) plays when they need an o-line type blocker at FB to lead the way for C. Martin. If you haven't seen him in college, you have to see this guy block - its awesome!!! Again, I am a bit biased but I have to pull for my hometown guy.
I'll never forget when Bernstein rolled over us (PSU) when Calhoun and the other guy were injured. It was during a Jewish holiday (forget which one) and he had been fasting and had to have an IV at halftime. Incredible performance.
