I have a question that is especially pertinent for the Jets. I'm not sure how Tanny plans to play it with regards to Revis, Mangold, D'Brick, and possibly Leon (though his agent makes me want him to go on the market just to shut him up) but given the fact that they are all due to have their contracts expire next year, assuming no lock out, is there an exclusive resigning negotiating period for teams prior to them hitting the market?

Can't seem to find an answer to this on the web...

Why would he want Revis, Mangold, and D'Brick to quit football?

Well, you have the entire time up until the first day of free agency.

This team is in big trouble if Brick, Mangold and Revis resign.

I think you mean re-sign...resign means quit.

I think I'm a little too nice to people to make mistakes haha

EDIT: Actually I don't think the hyphen is necessary...just a space in between the two words should express your intent.

They can until the cap comes back. The bigger worry next year is whether there will even be football. More than half the owners would appear to hope it doesn't.

    just wait and see.

Leon won't be given a long term deal. He's gone after this year. Keels is a gay headache.

I liked leon, but hate Keels...he is an annoying queer who makes me hope we never have another one of his clients on the team

as for a lock out...it'd be dumb of the NFL to do given the popularity of the sport and the money to be made but given the fact that the owners will make money albeit less if there is no football played...(also gotta account for the fact that there are fewer expenses, so the net may yield the owners more money but hey...gotta think long term here)

I don't think that is entirely true. I believe Revis has a team option for next year (albeit an expensive one). And if I am not mistaken Brick signed a 6-year contract (2006). Leon probably won't be re-sign.

Giving Revis and Mangold extensions are priority though. Tanny, I am sure, is well aware of this fact, and I have no doubt he will get it done.

According the Nyjetscap.com, Mangold and Edwards are UFAs after next season, Cromartie, Harris and Holmes are RFAs.

    In 2012, D'Brick is a UFA.

In 2013 Keller and Revis are UFAs. Greene's an RFA.

So, with the cash they'll save cutting Faneca next summer and possibly Gholston, should resign, in order:

    - Mangold
    - Harris
    - ONE of Edwards or Holmes
    - Cromartie (if he performs)

If Tanny frontloads some of these deals, should be alright.

I wonder if they can backload a contract or two and keep Holmes and Edwards. Would be awesome to have that potent 3 WR set for a few years.

No-one thought it would actually happen to the NHL either.

yeah, but the NHL never had the following and didn't the get reaction I feel the NFL will get if they don't come to an agreement.

The other big sticking point to extending these guys are the new rules triggered by the owners opting out of the labor agreement and uncapped season.

For contract extensions, the players can only receive a 30% raise in 2010 and 2011. It becomes a Catch 22 as the owners don't want to invest in huge signing bonuses with the chance there will be no football in 2011. The players don't want to sign a backloaded, non guaranteed contract where the big salaries do not kick in for at least two more seasons.

Great post, I agree. Harris is playing well above his current pay.
