This is something I still can't make my mind up about. I believe, barring Mariota being there, the pick will undoubtedly be a OLB or WR. Both positions have 7-8/10 options that will be available in the 2nd. I believe both these players to be 10/10; the top selection at their position. Assuming that to be true, who should we select??
I like White becoming the stud, but I feel like Cooper is the perfect match personality/player wise for Bowles' new NYJ identity,
Hey Mangolden, I think it would be helpful if you just said the guys that you think will land in 2nd round for OLB and WR to guide the discussion. Because way I see the board shaping up, I see Lb as much thinner when we pixk in the 2nd than WR. I still think Gregory and Ray go in the first and I am seeing many mocks where Harold goes in the first too. Remember not too long ago Dupree was considered a 2nd round prospect and now it seems like he can go top 10. To answer the post, I go with Beasley as per my above comments I think guys like Strong or Dorsett or DGB more likely to be there when we pick than Harold. And I dont have a 2nd round grade on Orchard or Kihaha (3rd round grades)
I think this draft is deeper at the WR position then the LB position and therefore I'd go with Beasley. The uncertainty at the QB position makes it even more critical that we build on this defense thus taking pressure off our offense since games ,hopefully, will be lower scoring. We've needed a playmaker at the LB position ever since I can remember so I can't see passing up the opportunity to get a kid like Beasley. I'm more confident that we can pick up a playmaking WR in round 2.
Cooper 100% Beasley is overrated. Problem is Cooper will probably be gone.. I'd take White over Beasley by a mile too.
My preferable scenarios: 1. Take Fowler/Cooper 2. Mariota is there at 6. Either take him or trade down. Like either one. 3. Mariota is not there, but someone worth trading up for (for another team, say Leonard Williams) is there. We trade down.
To me Cooper has the most star power in this draft. He has a shot to be our #1 for the next 10 years. No OLB has that much of a guarantee. If he's there you take him. If not trade down. Our D is good enough as is.
I know Marshall isn't a long-time solution at WR but I think we're pretty good at the WR position for at least this year and maybe next year. Plus you can typically get pretty good WR prospects in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Cooper might end up as your 3rd or 4th most targeted WR while Beasley could be unleashed with a high degree of frequency given who our head coach is and his style of play. Based on the fact that I don't really rate Cooper astronomically higher than Beasley on a big board and that Beasley is both a position of value and need I would take Beasley. That being said: I would take Cooper over Ray or Dupree because I don't rate them as high on a big board.
It's a fair point on who could impact the team more today. I think Pace is like 34. and Coples has been underwhelming. We need some young blood rushing from the outside unless we are high on Reilly and IK.
You make a good point... but I don't think Cooper would simply be the #3. He can play outside and slide Decker inside. Drafting Cooper really means that Kerley gets displaced to an emergency #4 role. To that I say who cares? Idzik should never have resigned him.
Cooper would be the smoothest in the slot and Brandon Marshall has done some real damage in the slot. Decker would be the last one to move inside. Back to the OP you absolutely take Cooper or White whichever one is still there before Beasley.
I'm going to throw a wrench into this thread by predicting/insisting the Jets take R. Gregory if he falls to them at 6 - pot smoking puffer and all. I think he's better than Fowler - just from what I have seen film of - he would be a star. Don't think it's a risk at all, imo.
Gailey during his BUF days used to run a lot of 4 WR sets. With Decker, Marshall and Cooper you have 3 dangerous receivers all w/ different skill-sets that can be placed anywhere. Flanker, Split-end, slot. Plus, you have to consider Marshall and Decker haven't always been the most durable. Brandon is also 31.
Cooper might step in and make an impact in his first two years. Maybe. Or he might end up as a slot receiver, which has value and I'm not knocking them but he's not Megatron 2.0 (nor does he have to be). Beasley on the other hand can come in and contribute today in a major way, we can use Pace more sparingly which will keep him rested and fresh and give Beasley the opportunity to take over that role and then we can walk away from Pace or have him in more of a situational role. I don't think we're high on any of our other pass rushing prospects. At least I'm not.
