What is the general consensus on him? Regardless of Superbowl wins or lack thereof I find it hard to believe that anyone can leave him out of their top 6-8 quarterbacks. He's incredibly fun to watch because of the crazy arm angles, essentially calling his own plays every series and watching him keep his team in the game when he's essentially surrounded by all 2nd and 3rd stringers on both sides of the ball sans a couple players. What do you guys think of him? I couldn't believe people wouldn't want him here but that's not really what I'm asking. Do you put him in the same discussion as Brady, Rodgers, Roethlisberger and formerly Brees/Peyton?
As good as he is, he makes too many bonehead decisions and throws in the big moments. I do not put him up with those you named.
Hey, remember when Junc was arguing that anyone who knows the game would take Sanchez over him Sorry, I couldn't resist.
I agree especially early on in his career. At this point I see it as a lot of over compensating for the garbage around him though. They only have one offensive lineman they started the season with and that's a pedestrian DJ Fluker, a former first round pick they were forced to move to guard because he's too big and slow to play tackle. If you listen to the audio he's calling out the MIKE every play and running up behind the center to make all the line calls because they probably don't trust the backup center to make those calls. There's also reports he's playing with a terrible back, not that that makes up for bad decisions. Maybe I'm just enamored with the competitor he is. The guy hasn't been playing with much of a running game for a couple years now either.
He's a step Below Brady and Rodgers (everyone is), but he's right there with just about everyone else at this point. I'd probably have him something like 6th. In addition to Brady and Rodgers, I'd also probably take Big Ben and Romo over him. Then Probably Brees and Peyton (although, both of those guys are questionable at this point in their respective careers)
That sequence is exactly why he isn't elite. Ignores a wide open Woodhead, then forces one to him... and just lobs it.
There's a pretty good example of what you were saying and some of what I was saying so it's noted. If Rivers can step into that final throw I'm sure he can get enough gas on it so the defender can't react. He still threw for over 500 yards with a backup offensive line against a top 5 defense. Sucks to see him almost win it and lose it at the same time.
The guy threw for over 500 yards in Lambeau and his name isn't Rodgers. If he isn't elite, I don't think this is the game to be highlighting to prove the point.
He choked at the goal line. It's not even debatable. Rogers, Brady, and even Big Ben get that game into OT.
The guy got screwed the moment that Daddy Manning would not let Eli go to San Diego. Who knows what could have been if he landed with another team.
Probably, but who knows. I'd still take Rivers for our current QB's on this roster. He's still a top QB in this league. With Rivers, the Jets would be legit SB contenders. Unfortunately, with Fitz/Geno/Petty..they aren't.
He threw for 500+ yards and 4 touchdowns yesterday, 500 yards and they STILL lost the game. It's amazing, Rivers is throwing to about a 70% completion rate, he is on fire, marched your team down the field to get you first and goal and you call a Danny Woodhead run up the middle, not once, but TWICE! lol... How do you not just have Rivers take four shots at the endzone there? How do you go to Danny Woodhead twice in that situation? Rivers is an exceptional QB surrounded by bad coaching, aloof fans, and lackluster talent.
The better question is how do you throw for 500 yards and only score 20? At the risk of sounding like junc, the yards don't matter if you're throwing a slowball and throwing it late on the most important throw of the game
I tend to be a fan of Rivers. Dont see him enough to feel very strongly about it. But I think he's accomplishing a great deal given the absence of talent on his team. Shitty owners. Below average CS. As Steve Young said about him, all the other top Qb's consider Rivers in their league.
He's like that other QB the Chargers had in the 80's who got in the HOF but really no one talks about nowadays...Dan Fouts...Unless its about his awful commentating.
