Jets can no longer hide Mark Sanchez Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on November 18, 2011, 1:09 AM EST The headlines from Thursday night’s game will be about Tim Tebow. They should be about the lack of progress by the Jets offense in year three of the Mark Sanchez era. The Jets defense is the same as it ever was, a Super Bowl caliber group. It played a sensational game on Thursday night, and any moderately competent offense and quarterback would have easily put the Broncos away before Tebowmania took hold. Consider: The Broncos started five possessions in Jets territory. They got three points out of those five chances. In the 10 drives leading into Denver’s game-winning march, the Broncos had two first downs. Denver went three and out eight times in that span, including four straight times. It was as dominant a defensive performance as you’ll see. At this point, all the Jets ask Mark Sanchez to do is not make the big mistake. He still made it, delivering seven points to the Broncos on a game-changing third quarter pick six. Throws like that make the Jets run on third down and punt the ball away instead of playing to win. Throws like that make Rex Ryan play it conservative even when the Jets face a terrible secondary like the Patriots. The Jets don’t trust their quarback. Sanchez is leading the same streaky offense with non-stop slants that puttered around .500 into December in 2009. You can only hide your quarterback for so long, and Sanchez’s stagnation is plain for everyone to see.
Ouch. There are obviously other factors involved, but Sanchez makes me nervous every time he drops back to pass. I'd like to see him get consistent protection, but I am starting to get concerned.
Biggest stat 14 for 104....first half passing. They flood a 10 yard area of the field with three or more receivers. They have one play of 40 yards or more all season. The is the least explosive offense in football. Either the play calling sucks, they are telling Sanchez to dump it off, or he is looking to dump it because he is afraid of his offensive line. They live and die by the 5 yard slant. Teams know its easy to defend the jets. Cheat everyone up to stop the run, keep a receiver in front of you for 3 seconds since he is only going 5 yards, jump the route or tackle. Force third down and 4 or more and they will run into the line. Greene goes out last night and the adjustment should have been instant to get McKnight in space on the outside and they didn't. Take a shot deep once a qtr even if it is out of bounds just to keep a safety honest. Herm said you play to win the game and that was a game played to not lose.
Sanchez probably has one more year, unless we get a QB that drops into our laps this off season. Front office won't want to admit yet they goofed on trading up for mark, and who know's maybe year 4 will prove them right, but I now doubt it.
Although, and this is an after thought. Perhaps the early success stunted Mark's growth, two years in the AFCC in his first two years...maybe adversity will force him to grow...doubt it, but there is that chance.
He just doesn't have it. It can't be understated how dominant and great the Jets running game was in '09. They led the league in every major stat and dominated the clock. Couple that with a lights out defense and it made perfect sense as to why Sanchez had the limited success he did. You had to to play run against that O all day. So the play action was very effective. Fast forward to today and the run game is 24th in the league. Now the holes show. Sanchez just never had it to begin with. He is just not a good QB. Period. I was amped when we traded up to get him. I applauded the move. So I am not going to rip Mgt for it now. But the bottom line...he's a bust.
No excuses,he got the recievers to deliver the ball and hes always throwing way high, and this throws under 10 yards are a killer for the jets.
This is such nonsense, Mark was a key contributor to 2 AFC title game teams, he's played poorly a couple of weeks ina row but he's fine at QB. Much like last year at NE and vs. Miami, he gets into a funk but he'll get over it.
Teams are exploiting Wayne Hunter, the rest of the line is pretty solid, but Hunter is an absolute diaster.
Watching that game last night I know exactly how you guys feel (I'm a dolphins fan). Your offense is so similar to ours last year. Never went deep, alot of shitty plays and our qb just sucked. Our only hope was to get a new offensive coordinator and give Henne one more year. Honestly I just dont think Sanchez is the guy, but the way Henne played this year (I know it was only a few games, but he was a completely different quarterback), I think it is possible Sanchez could turn around too. Like I said in another post, Henne and Sanchez struggled with alot of the same things. And even though Henne wasn't dominant by any means he still showed incredible improvement. He actually looked like a real quarterback. Like I said, I dont think Sanchez is the guy, but I think you gotta give him an opportunity under a new coordinator and if he still sucks then get rid of him. You guys invested too much and lets face it, he has played decent in the playoffs. Especially against New England. Not great but alot better than he had in the regular season.
But, you're not getting paid the big bucks to get it right. Management is! As a Phin fan, I know it could be worse.
We all love Mark, he's a grreat kid, but, the truth is right before your eyes, no way this team should have lost to Tebow last night... Sorry folks buit time to put this season behind us ......We are not going anywhere with this wreck of and offense....
I dont like PFT, but it's hard to disagree here....... The kid has regressed with the added responsibility on his shoulders. The Jets are in too deep at this point. Best bet would be a new OC and see how that works. Hopefully it can be a late bloomer scenario. Drew Brees SUCKED so bad in the beginning that he lost his job to Flutie at 1 point, then sucked again, making them draft Rivers. Lucky for him Rivers held out of camp, and the job was his by default, and he finally hit his stride that season. Then hurt his shoulder, so they went with their top pick $$, and the rest is history......... not likely, but we'll see....... Freeman has also been sucking this year too, so Sanchez isn't the only one in a 3rd year funk. One thing though, the kid needs to toughen up. No more pansy ass photo shoots this offseason. If he has enough free time to model girl's clothes, he needs to take MMA lessons or something.... It's not like he needs the money :breakdance:
