https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2014/03/24/sig-stats-drop-rate-wrs/ Kerley ranked 3rd out of every receiver in the league, only dropping 1 ball of 44 catchable throws last season .
Kerley is a very very similar player to Jerricho Cotchery, in terms of reliability and the exactly what he does for us on the field. Although he isn't underrated on these forums, Cotchery is definitely underated around the league. The same can be said for Kerley, and I'm looking forward to seeing him play this season.
Agreed on all counts. I've been saying how Cotchery is one of the most underrated receivers in the league. He even had a career year with Pitt last season. I can see him repeating similiar success with Cam and the Panthers. Big fan of Kerley, liking him as our #2/3 receiver. Would be totally content with Decker, D-Jax (if we're fortunate enough) and Kerley as our first 3 receivers. Draft a WR, and our core might be very workable going into the season.
Black Chrebet lol seriously though how many years are left until he needs a new contract? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Whether we will/should get DJax is another topic, but if he is on the team I can see some interesting variations. DJax and Kerley can both play inside or outside, so bringing DJax into the slot will be an excellent tool for creating mismatches.
Kerley is great and definitely one of my favorite Jets on the current roster. But IMO, He doesn't have the speed or size to play on the outside. Lengthier corners will have a much easier time covering him then a larger WR. Cotchery has about 4" and 15 lbs on Kerley. D. Jackson who I always felt was small for the outside position is still 2" taller then Kerley ( and significantly faster 4.35 < 4.55 ) Kerley makes his bread and butter being quick, not fast or large. It's no surprise we're looking at bigger targets ( picking up Decker especially 6" taller and 30lbs heavier, solid hands, decent speed ) for the outside position. If we don't make a play for a legit #1 we have to hope the light turns on for Hill. Those 3 players could wreak havoc on opposing secondaries. None of them being a true #1 WR, But the combo of the 3 would be a headache to game plan for. Big Possession WR - Decker, Top off the defense Speedster - Hill Slot Possession - Kerley
LMAO - we don't have to hope the lights go on for Hill, his ass is getting replaced this off-season. Once the Jets draft Lee, Hill will be nothing more than #5 receiver that comes in when we need to go deep. Change that to: YAC beast - Marquis Lee.
reading comprehension... On top of that I don't understand why so many people are so happy to write off young players on our roster. Nothing is ever a sure thing, Even top prospect WRs are not guaranteed to produce right away. By many accounts Hill has been working hard, is a good teammate, and has the physical tools needed to be successful. He dealt with injuries and 3 of the worst QBs in the league his first 2 years. Why write him off before we see what he can do in year #3 and 4 with a non-rookie QB and another year experience in a real NFL offense? He's not going to cost us much and even if he gets one deep throw a game he's worth having around on the roster. If you want instant gratification, there are plenty of sites on the internet unrelated to football that you can find to help with that.
Hills numbers look a lot better with that td pass interference call against NE. They give that catch to any big name receiver in the league.
Football comprehension. This whole we need a #1 WR is stupid. The whole idea of it is retarded. We need reliable receivers. Stephen Hill is not reliable. He doesn't look like a football player, he's not fluid by any stretch.
To add if we get D-Jax, then Stephen Hill is 100% done. I don't want instant gratification, I want football players, not athletes.
Not necessarily. He's still on his rookie contract so he's extremely cheap (and obviously unproven). Given his contract (and - arguable - potential), he could easily end up being the 5th receiver on our roster that we choose to keep. Depends if we value him over Nelson, though.
Nelson was far more RELIABLE Stephen Hill. If D-Jax comes here, what exactly will Stephen Hill bring to this team? He doesn't play special teams, as a #5 receiver on a depth chart, I would assume that player would play ST. potential means nothing if you can't fulfill it. Tons of players have potential. We need receivers that are reliable plain and simple. The Seahawk receivers were reliable.
So replace my "#1" with reliable, It still is a true statement. Don't be obtuse and argue over semantics. What makes you so confident that Hill has no chance of becoming a reliable WR? He made some good progress for his 2nd year in the league and we all knew he was going to be a project. Here's a decent article about Hill's 2nd year improvements ( and struggles ). http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1780452-breaking-down-stephen-hills-progression-in-year-2 Some people make it really hard to have a reasonable conversation on this forum. I don't really like the #1-3 talk either but it is what it is. IMO a #1 is a WR that forces a match up with the other teams top corner ( and/or safety help over the top ), and also has a good chance to beat said corner 1on1. Basically a WR that can still make a play when people know it's coming. Players like the Johnson's that can go up and make plays with 2-3 defenders around him. We really haven't had that kind of player for quite some time so not sure why people are so trigger happy to write one of the guys off that has potential to be that for us. Something like this: http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/2013081702/2013/PRE2/jaguars@jets#menu=highlights&tab=recap - Play #1 of the highlights. Man coverage from the safety with the CB and LB playing underneath and Hill makes a play. Not saying he's there yet,. Just not sure why everyone is so happy to write him off. He's showing progress. Just needs to stay on the field.
Stephen Hill has not proven to be reliable at any point in his career. Unless he's playing the Bills at home. Not enough progress. Bad hands, not fluid, still a shitty route runner. I didn't see much improvement. This article was written in September 2013, give me a fucking break. And it's by BR. Some people make it really hard to have a reasonable conversation because they refuse to take off those green-colored glasses. Stephen Hill isn't saving the day sorry man. Time to move on.
Nelson had 12 more receptions for 80 yards on 1 more target and 1 more drop then Stephen Hill did. He played more of a possession role then Hill and doesn't have nearly as high of a ceiling. If Hill has 0 chance of being a legit WR in the NFL I don't see how you can throw any praise towards Nelson. Not to mention Nelson is going into his 4th year and played 4 years in an NFL style offense in college. Comparing the 2 isn't really valid and if it came down to it, With a player that's going to see limited action I'll take the one with the higher ceiling. Nelson is just a poor mans Eric Decker, Stephen Hill is of a different mold IMHO.
Right now Hill is the #4, behind Decker, Kerley, and Nelson. If DJax comes in, he'll drop to 5. Unless he is included in a trade deal to Philly, there's no reason he won't be on the team. The problem with Hill is not his speed or physical tools, it's that he is not able to win 1 on 1 battles against coverage. The reason he is only successful on deep balls is because if he outruns a guy on any given play, he is open by default. He is not successful at getting open with his hands or his routes, and to cap it off he has sub par hands. CBs consistently win vs him, and in his two best games (Wk 1 2012 v BUF) he was playing against a rookie CB in his first game, and (Wk 5 2013 @ ATL) he was playing the worst secondary in the league, arguably the worst overall defense. Keep him around for go-routes and depth, and maybe by 2015 he'll be worth something.
But unlike Hill, Nelson is successful at using what leverage he does have against DBs to get open. He is a good red zone threat, a good blocker, has good hands, and play with intelligence and intensity. Nelson will be a good depth WR, and although he has very limited athleticism in comparison to Hill, he winds up being a better receiver.
No one is saying he's going to save the day. All I'm saying is he has potential to improve and if he does that would greatly help the team. "Not enough progress" - After having a rookie Geno and Mark and Tebow under center, and taking a knock both seasons? If after all that you were expecting Hill to be Megatron in year 2 I think you're the one wearing some kind of shades that affect your vision. Some people here just love being miserable about this team. How about for 3 seconds you take off the "doom-colored" shades and look at the big picture. I don't see how either of these statements invalidates my point. They break down the plays they're talking about ( with images in case that's easier for you to understand ) and have valid points all the way through the article pointing out things he does well and things he needs to improve on. Just because the article doesn't support your opinion doesn't mean it's wrong....
