http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/M/MannPe00_playoffs.htm Peyton Manning and the Colts are only 2-5 vs. 3-4 teams in the playoffs. Now, I know that they destroyed the Ravens last week but the Colts still have a much better record vs. 4-3 teams at 6-3. Just something that might give the Jets a bit of an edge come next Sunday.
Jets D > Ravens D our secondary is a lot better I also like Green's chances to overpower an undersized Colts D. Yes they're fast but Greene can run them over.
They've beaten the Ravens twice in the last three seasons in the playoffs. The Ravens are by far the team most similar to the Jets in terms of defensive schemes in the NFL. I look at that chart and I don't like what I see. The Chargers are much more like a typical 3-4 defense with a dominant outside linebacker leading a 4 man rush with the occasional safety help.
our D plays excellent man coverage.....which frees up our blitz pkgs to wreak havoc.....I'm counting on this to throw Manning off his rhythm. The Ravens secondary is inferior to ours.....that's the difference.
We have the best coverage in the NFL, but we have immense trouble generating pressure without blitzing. Now, our coverage is good enough to handle wide receivers one-on-one matchups for a couple seconds while our blitzers get to the QB, and they're almost impossible to find holes against when we drop 7, but it's when we overload blitz and they pick it up--either through max protect or by throwing into the blitz--i.e. the Gates one-hand catch--that we're fucked, because we don't have enough really good cover guys to take every weapon out of play. Nobody does.
And yet, the Ravens have always been more stout against the run than the pass, especially of late. Our offense also matches up better than the Ravens'. Power over speed. If McClain and McGahee had been used like they were last season, it might have been a different game Saturday. Closer, anyway.
Jets played 5 playoff teams in the regular season + 2 playoff games. They won 6 of 7. Ravens played 6 playoff teams in the regular season + 2 playoff games. They won 2 of 8. One in week 2 and one last week. Just thought I'd throw out that stat.
The Ravens 3-4 is built around an ILB. The Jets is built around a CB. That explains the difference in the two 3-4's strengths. And yes, I agree with you that there is a real difference in the two defenses. I think that's why the Jets have a shot on Sunday - if the Colts had a feature back to run with we'd be in real trouble. I don't know if we match up better offensively than the Ravens did. I think the Ravens were crippled by the fact that Flacco was hurting bad and they really did not want him taking any hits back there, or absolutely as few as they could. I worry a bit about Dwight Freeney coming in unchecked, as he did twice in the regular season, and lowering the boom on Sanchez. The answer to that is to run a lot of traps in his direction and make the Colts pay if he just puts his head down and heads for Sanchez.
Those were supposed to be quick read plays and both Ryan and Sanchez said in the post game that they were on Sanchez. 6 rushers, 5 linemen. Every receiver has one on one coverage, pick a guy and throw it.
They do, but they just can't run. Even in the last Jets/Colts meeting, they had that lucky 20+ yard run for TD, and a third and goal TD where Revis missed the tackle which would have been for a loss (Very rare of Revis and its not gonna happen again).
Not an Addai, an Edgerrin James in his prime or an Adrian Peterson. Those are the kind of guys I worry about against this defense right now.
I worry about ANY defender blitzing unblocked. Gholston can get a bunch of sacks too if he was left alone. Freeney had two sacks, both unblocked. Nothing really scares me about his. We have D'Brick and he can handle Freeney just like he has done with several elite DEs this yr.
What the Colts have done before the 2009 is completely irrelevant, the same goes for the Jets. Each year each teams fields a completely different team.
Yes, but this is exactly the kind of play the Jets can't afford to call right now. Giving Dwight Freeney a free run at Sanchez if Sanchez blows a split-second decision is how this season is likely to end. The Jets season finally came together when everybody involved, including Sanchez, accepted the fact that we had a rookie QB who could not be relied on to do all that much this year. If they forget that for even a second against the Colts the game is going to go over and we'll have the off-season to prepare Sanchez for his real coming out next year. Either of the plays where Sanchez blew the read and took the sack could have turned into a fumble and season over for the Jets.
Donald Brown was a first rounder in the last draft. Him and Addai are good enough to gain 1000 yards if they were on different teams as featured backs. But Jets will stop their running game just like the other 13 teams did.
I meant our running attack. Last year, the Ravens ran that three headed attack with McClain, McGahee, and Rice splitting carries fairly evenly. That likely would have matched up better with the Colts. They're a speedy defense that's harder to beat with the screens and with Rice. It's much better to attack them up the middle, which is exactly what we're planning to do. IIRC, McGahee and McClain each got a carry or two, and early in the game. That's not going to cut it. It also didn't help that Baltimore turned almost entirely to the pass in the 2nd half. Again, IIRC, Rice had maybe 5 carries the entire 2nd half as Baltimore tried to pass its way out of the deficit. Of course, the two fumbles didn't help things either.
Isn't it freaking fantastic to be on this board on January 18th talking about how we go about winning the AFC championship and head to the Super Bowl. Fans of 28 other teams are on Draft Boards right now trying to figure what moves their teams can make to get here. I don't believe we're playing on house money because this is too rare to take that flippantly but this is definitely bonus time. THANKS TO REX, ALL THE JETS PLAYERS AND ORGANIZATION FOR NEVER EVER GIVING UP!!! What Fun.
