Dave Hutchinson has a new story up about our new defensive coordinator, and he has plenty of interesting things to say about our No. 6 draft pick. Jets' New ``D'' coordinator says he saw red flag on Gholston in college by Dave Hutchinson Thursday January 22, 2009, 3:01 PM Boy, this new speak-your-mind fever spreading through the Jets' Florham Park training facility is great. We beat writers didn't even get answers this straight under my old pal Herm Edwards. New Jets defensive coordinator Mike Pettine is the latest to step to the mike and here are a few highlights: On first-round disappointment Vernon Gholston: ``Obviously, we all know what he did at the combine but being in shorts is one thing and actually how it carries over to the field is another. We liked him (in the draft) for sure, but some of the issues that he came in with ... there was a lack of consistency in some of his play. He would flash brilliance for two or three plays, then disappear. ``That's one thing we had in our notes. If he ended up a Raven, he'd have to work on being more consistent. For a physical standpoint, he's got all the tools. I'm looking forward to meeting Vernon and seeing what makes him tick. If the guy's got it in him, we're gonnat get it out of him.'' Have they changed the water company at the Atlantic Health Jets training center? His system: ``One thing about our system is it's player-driven. We've always been of the mindset of, you fit your system to the players, not the player to the system. We're not going to come in with the playbook and say we're squeezing New York Jets personnel into the Baltimore Ravens playbook. The centerpiece of our system is our flexibity.'' On Rex Ryan: ``He and I were just kind of drawn to each other from the beginning. I think we made a pretty good team in Baltimore. We joke that neither one of us could survive without the other.'' Pettine, the son of a Pennsylvania high school coaching icon Mike Pettine, the younger Pettine came up the hard way. He spent seven seasons as a high school coach and two seasons as a graduate assistant at Pitt before catching on in the Ravens' video department in 2002. He and Rex Ryan immediately stuck up a friendship. ``Whether it was real or preceived, I always felt I had something to prove, being someone who didn't take the traditional path. There aren't too many high school coaches who make it to the NFL. I've used that to motivate me.''
"If the guy's got it in him, we're gonna get it out of him.'' What he doesn't tell you is that if he doesn't they'll kick the shit out of him until he has it in him.
Yeah this is a big year for Gholston. If he is unable to crack the starting lineup we may be in for yet another draft blunder.
If Gholston can't do it under this coaching staff with Ryan and Pettine he will be a considered a bust no questions asked

How's that for a 2x4 up against Mangini's head.
Pettine mentions consistency and Gholston. The one thing that is clear is that Gholston has been consistently ineffective during his pro career. Let's hope this changes in 2009.
This was one of Mangini's problems, forcing the system on the players. Glad to hear that mistake won't be repeated.
It just makes me think how VG will react to all this attention he is getting now. If he is a weak person he could let all this talk get him down. If he is strong he could use it as fuel every day in practice to help him get better. We will find out who the real VG is this season no questions asked.
He is saying where Mangini went wrong we had 4-3 guys good ones & he forced his system on us which makes him a bad coach
Read the dudes bio...he is anything but weak...this just goes to show you what kind of world it is these days...give the kid a chance...no one knows what happened behind closed doors...but even with that...players need a chance to develop...especially when they are changing positions...he didnt get many opportunities last year...you bet he will get them this year...I have a feeling that last year...after BT's 2 sack first game...Gholstons year was doomed from the start...three outside backers who have huge and new contracts with only two starting spots...different story this year...give him a chance...this time next year we will all be worshipping him...
It really is an amazing concept, and most success stories happen this way, maybe Mangini will realize this in his career
word. another point i enjoyed is when he spoke on the "system" its not choose the players to fit in the system. its the system that fits in the players. its a players system. that means, colemans is 2nd string. mike devito is gone. bryan thomas is out. david bowens is out. because theyre soft like baby shit.
