@MMehtaNYDN: Jets defensive coordinator Mike Pettine has turned down a contract extension, per source. Not signed after end of this season. #nyj

Thought he was hard nosed in hard Knocks. But possibly more incentive to keep Rex around

Don't want to see Pettine go.
Unless it's making room for Rex.

Is it possible he's not signing an extension because he believes he could be a HC somewhere?

new gm brings in new hc and likely a whole new co-ordinator set.

Pettine is a good DC but not elite as per a Phillips type...

Easily replaceable IF we get the right GM and HC as the talent oN defense is their in many areas

We are not moving in the right direction. To whoever says that he is easily replaceable, I don't understand how. This team is going to shits if Rex is fired.

  9. He's likely hesitant to sign any extension till he knows how the front office/ HC is gonna shake out. Additionally he maybe hoping for an HC himself..or perhaps he wants to stand on his own 2 feet removed from the "Rex Ryan" label.

Pettinne has been fantastic here. But this is no reason to panic. DB coach Dennis Thurman can easily step into the DC role...and frankly he's been deserving of the promotion for quite some time.

The HC and GM are not going anywhere. Pettine, does not want to be in the position of having the team dictate where and when he. An go.

I think this is more a product of Pettine not knowing whether or not Rex will be fired. Tannenbaum I think will get canned but I think Rex has earned the right to stay.

Most likely just wanted the flexibility. If the FO didn't decide Rex's fate until late January, that'd be a whole month of positions being filled that Pettine would've been able to shoot for. Now he can jump off a sinking ship when there's still lifeboats.

Really no reason to panic. Pettine has been excellent here. He is most likely hoping for a HC position somewhere. Also Rex generally gets most of the credit for the defense. He might feel overshadowed and want to move on to a place where he will be recognized more for his abilities. So even though he and Rex are good friends, he might be positioning himself for a HC position in the future.

We have to see how the offseason plays out for him. He might end up signing that extension in the future if he doesn't catch on somewhere else.

I don't want to see him go, but as long as Rex is here I'm not worried about the defense. And like someone else pointed out we have excellent position coaches on defense that would be more than capable to step in, namely Thurmon and Dunbar.

Fck I really don't want to lose RR/Pettine but I bet he's doing that because he wants to stick with RR. In case he's not brought back Pettine doesn't want to be locked in. Or he wants to go his own way who knows.

It makes sense for him. He needs to seperate himself from Rex if he wants to have a chance to become a head coach one day. Needs to prove run a top defense on his own. Too much in Rex's shadow here.

You guys need to get over this delusion that if they fire the GM a new GM won't replace Rex and basically every other coach on the Jets. No new GM is going to have his ass on the line with a group of coaches and players he never hired signed, or drafted.

If Tanny goes, Rex is as good as gone, people just need to accept that.

Long as Rex doesn't go, I'm fine. I think it's a good idea for him if he wants to get out of Rex's shadow.
