I don't know what speculations or anit-King posts this will drum up but he thinks the draft is going to go like this..enjoy. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/peter_king/03/21/mmqb/1.html 6. New York Jets. Michigan OT Jake Long. You and I and everyone else who does these things believe there's no way Long lasts 'til number six. And he probably won't. But funny things happen in unpredictable drafts like this one. The benefit for the Jets: If D'Brickashaw Ferguson continues to be a C-plus left tackle, Long could play the right side this year, then the coaches could decide who'd be the best left tackle in 2009. But here's my view if Ryan's there: The Jets will hold an auction and try to get two first-day picks for this slot.
I Dont see us taking Jake Long after we just signed Faneca and Woody... King's a real douche in my opinion , I Still say we take either Gholston or McFadden at 6.
I would be more than happy with Jake Long. The kids a Stud and we could always move Woody back to Guard and ship Brandon Moore out.
If we got Jake Long we would have by far the best OL in football, bar none. Woody would move to RG and Long to RT. That would be 5 1st rounders on the OL (6 if you want to count Franks) with 4 of them having a chance of making the pro bowl. Even Thomas Jones could find the holes behind that OL. It would look like an open garage door as he got to the line. The best part however would be to make NE's DL look like a bunch of kids.
There is no way Jake Long is getting past the Rams, Falcons and Chiefs. Ain't gonna happen - don't bother getting your hopes up. That being said, if he somehow, miraculously, was available at 6, the Jets should snatch him up, start him at tackle, move Woody back to guard, and essentially congratulate themselves for solidifying the OL for many years to come. You simply can't win without a good OL. Although the Jets' OL should be much improved in 2008, adding Jake Long essentially would lock in a premiere OL for multiple years, thereby benefitting the running game and the passing game, and allowing the Jets to allocate the remainder of their draft picks this year, and next year, on other needs. Mike
agreed. if he's somehow there, i'd like to take him because that OL would be fierce. for now and the future.
There is no way the signing of a guy like Woody keeps us from drafting Jake Long if we are lucky enough for him to drop to us. That said, there is no way in hell he falls that far.
We just put big $ in two o-linemen then draft one with our first pick ? I doubt we do that. Jake Long will be gone by 6 anyway. Either Gholston or McFadden and if there both gone and we cant trade out we should look at McKelvin from Troy st.
Every thread you read here makes it more sensible to trade up to the #4 pick where we are assured of getting a player worth the pick.
jake longs a liar... he told me at the walter camp clinic he could bench 520 for 4 reps but he could only do 37 reps on the bench... what an asshole:beer:
except for the fact that we really dont have any glaring weakness and need depth in alot of positions. Anyway, No way Jake Long makes it to 6 but if he did i would take him and not think twice. Sure we got Woody, but this guy is a franchise tackle. Having 2 bookends for the next 10 years+ would make alot of things easier.
The Jets should hope Long is there insread of Ryan. There would be a much better chance to trade down(Chicago, Carolina, Phila)
The only way we should use our first round draft pick on an O-Lineman is if Long is there. If not go ge an impact player. All the teams that win have that big time player. Pats have Brady and Moss and that D. The Giants have great pass rushers and Burress. I mean lets go. Dont trade down and take an o-lineman later like I have been hearing. Go out and get an impact player. They have the sixth pick in the draft. Use it.
If he's there, he's the best value on the board and either draft him or trade the pick to a team desperate for o-line help. However, if he gets past KC then KC deserves to be in the crapper for years to come. Him being at #5 would be a blessing for them.
.... or much more sensible to move down even at a slight loss of chart "value" to not reach for a player we can pick up in mid to late round one. The draft is a crap shoot, but the more bets you place the more likely you are to win. This front office has been on the money so far in round one, but I feel we are reaching a point where adding several players to improve over all depth will mean more then one potential impact guy. The better bet would seem to be to pick up some extra picks to go back if we can find a partner to trade with.
Maybe in a normal year you would be right. This, however, is not a normal year. This is a "win at all costs" year and with that you have to strike gold with the first pick. There is no guarantee you will do that at the bottom of the first round this year. There isn't at #6 either. People may want to argue that but all the evidence is there to say it is. They didn't spend 150 million dollars in FA so that they can take a "hit or miss" approach in the draft. I have said for weeks that I am convinced they will move up and so far nothing has happened to change my mind.
If long was to fall to 6, I would have to assume the Chris Long, Gholston, Ryan and McFadden are all gone. At that point the highest rated guys would be a defensive tackle or Jake Long. If forced to make a pick I would think you go with the sure fire O-lineman as opposed to a DT that probly does not fit our scheme. Why draft him? He has the talent to play LT but the size and grit for RT. Woody should be good for us, but to land a guy who will soildify our line for years to come would be too good to pass up. He is the BPA. You draft him unless someone would give a very good offer to move into our spot. As we both said though, its all a moot point. He's not going to be there. If he falls to 5 Herm may wet him self on his way to make the pick he'd be so damn happy.
I don't feel its a win at all costs year. You seem sold on that, I'm not. When is the last time Woody ran someone out of town? From what I recall the last few coaches have left us, not the other way around. Yes, we made a big time FA splash. We plugged some holes and will be very competitive this year. That said we are still building a solid foundation for the future. We moved Vilma for a future pick instead of taking whatever we could get in '08. That does not scream win now. The FO is plugging holes to give us as good as possible chance to win this year, but is still keeping an eye on the future. We have a good mix of solid vets and young guns at this point. Things seem headed in the right direction. If Tanny was really worried about his job he would have taken steps to get all his eggs in one basket. That he has not done.
