Time for Jets to get Randy Moss by RICH CIMINI daily news sports writer Sunday, March 2nd 2008, 10:39 AM (Page 1 of 3) When Bill Parcells sat down with his lieutenants to plot the 1998 offseason for the Jets, they compiled a 10-item wish list. Seventh on the agenda was running back, hardly a priority with Adrian Murrell coming off his second straight 1,000-yard season. One unexpected thing led to another, and soon the Jets were introducing Curtis Martin at a press conference. They made like midnight thieves, executing a stealthy, free-agent heist as Parcells' previous team snoozed. It changed the balance of power in the rivalry, and it didn't shift the other way until Bill Belichick and Tom Brady got going in 2001. These days, the gap with the New England spy boys never has been wider, and now Mike Tannenbaum - in the room with Parcells that day in '98 - has to figure out a way to make it competitive again. He needs to pull a Curtis Martin out of his hat, the way his mentor did a decade ago. Unless Tannenbaum can convince Gisele Bundchen to make Tom Brady run away with her and give up football, there's only one way to do it. Get Randy Moss. The record-setting receiver is an unrestricted free agent and, although he's negotiating with the Patriots, the two sides aren't close to a deal, according to ESPN. Moss is out there, willing to be wooed. The Jets should pick up the phone and start wooing. Will it happen? Probably not. Although Tannenbaum was vague Friday night when asked about the possibility of pursuing Moss ("We're going to proceed with our plan," he said), the Jets have no interest, I'm told. They should. Imagine Moss with Laveranues Coles and Jerricho Cotchery at wide receiver, with Thomas Jones and dynamic rookie Darren McFadden (just speculating here, folks) in the backfield, and with Pro Bowl guard Alan Faneca galvanizing the offensive line. More importantly, imagine the Patriots without Moss. I know what you're thinking: Moss would have to be insane to leave Brady and his comfy cocoon in New England. Fair point, but money talks. If the Jets can give $20 million in guarantees to Kris Jenkins, a 340-pound nose tackle who hasn't dominated in five years, they can cough up that kind of coin for Moss. Yes, the Jets have an unsettled quarterback situation, which would scare most premier receivers, but this situation is unique. Moss and Chad Pennington are former college teammates and are close friends. Moss thinks the world of Pennington. And Pennington lobbied the Jets' front office last spring when the Raiders put Moss on the trading block. The Jets showed no interest then, and they probably won't show any interest now. Like Tannenbaum said, they will proceed with the plan. But sometimes you have to abandon the plan, like they did a decade ago, when Parcells called an audible and everything changed between the Jets and Patriots.
Why did he write this article about Randy Moss? He keeps mentioning we probably wont go after him. There is no way we get Moss and keep Coles so that Coles Moss and Cotch idea sucks.
Makes perfect sense to me. Take the Patriots most dominant weapon and add your own weapon, suddenly you've tipped the scales of the balance of power. What it comes down to is whether or not our FO wants anything to do with the guy. Based on the part where they completely ignored him last offseason despite Penningtons lobbying, I'll say no.
I thought the same thing. The guy was the best DT in the game from 2002-2004, then had a bad piss test and a couple injuries which took 2 years away from his career. He was very good in 2006, proving he can be the same player he was. He's harldy long in the tooth. Due to his 2 years off he's younger than his age would dictate.
This makes perfect sense. They need to do something that would shake up the cheaters in Boston. This is the perfect plan. Even if he resigns with the cheaters, they will have to pay WAY MORE than they want to.
We don't need to sign him, but we should "pursue" the hell out of him. The more money it costs someone (Pats) to sign him, obviously the less money they have for different positions. And since we are signing guys to huge contracts, we need to minimize our rivals' salary options.
I laugh when I try to picture Moss and Pennington being close friends. Just imagine them hanging out together.........
Randy Moss would come here and do what he does every time he joins a mediocre to poor team: cash it in and coast. The man has a track record of dogging it when things get muddled or go south and there's no reason to believe he'd change that for the Jets.
That's assuming things go south. Moss did try hard when he first got to Oakland. The team just turned to crap quickly, and he got hurt, and then he never cared again. If the offensive line is revamped, the running game comes alive, and the defense plays well, Moss could play great. It's a major risk, one I don't think we're going to take, but the reward would be immense.
Moss to the Jets is as likely as Santana to Mets was a month ago. This is a deal that could and should happen. They're not only trying to build a championship team, they're trying to build a building. The cost can keep going up into heaven as long as the powers that be can spend less and less, and the fans can foot more and more of the bill. Moss justifies obscene PSL prices.
i think chad and randy go to the same church, and their kids play together in the same play group. randy had chad over for a sleep over a few weeks ago and they played guitar hero and made marshmellow and peanut butter sandwhiches, then they made a tent fort in the living room and went to sleep.
Exactly- I'm willing to take the gamble that the Jets will be a winning team with Moss. It probably won't happen, but signing Moss would absolutely give the Jets the opportunity to almost exclusively focus on defense in the draft. The Jets need a big target and a deep threat and Moss takes care of both. Moss, Coles, Cotchery would be on the top 5 WR tandems in the league. Throw in a refined offensive line, and the Jets would have the most explosive offense they've had in years. Moss still has a lot left in the tank and will be a stud WR for years to come. I'm a bit biased, but he's one of my top 3 favorite players of all time. If it can financially be done, I'm sure Tannenbaum will be able to do it. I'm not sure they will, but I won't be opposed to it. The biggest thing is that Moss won't be on the Pats and Brady is going to have to rely on Wes Welker as a #1- LOL!
If it isn't bad enough we have to have twenty get Moss threads every off-season, now we got this clown writing about it too. Must be one slow ass news day.
Every year the jets have been rumored to be trying to land randy moss. They just recycle articles every year and update the stats/team
who the hell is going to throw him the ball???? i am firmly on the clemens wagon but even i know that moss need an established veteran back there - even a pennington likely will not do jil
