1050 ESPN just said that they have learned that Chad and the Jets are close to signing a 1 year deal worth 3 million.
I hope this is true, I back the guy all the way. I hope he comes back and shuts up the critics, its either that, or he shuts up me. ugh
Im wondering that too. Does that mean hes a FA next year? Cuz if it does than that makes it certain that we're drafting QB this year
It's either take the 3 million or go back to Tennessee and fish for largemouth bass and eat at Crackel Barrell every night...
This is great news if this is true, sometimes these reports come out prematurely. I still don't want to completely give up on Pennington, I'd really like to see Pennington compete for the starting job next year (most likely with a rookie).
Let's hope not. The salary cap proration would be terrible on his original bonus. I think they mean they changed 2006 to 3M
If true, this is a good deal for the Jets. It's almost too good. I don't see Chad signing this. It reduces our cap significantly and it gives Chad only one year to prove his shoulder can be any use to us whatsoever. A year from now he could be $3 million richer but out on his ass.
My guess is the Jets don't want to go through the same mess next year. Plus, Chad will be playing for a long-term deal. Maybe he'll pull an Abraham and stay healthy for a whole year
No way. He is taking a multi-year cut? After getting an offer that would have allowed him to keep working? Unless he truly believes he is going to be fine, and is counting on the non-cap year to make his money. If there is no alterior motive, then I really hope the Penny critics shut up already. The guy has been a team player all along, so why not believe in him now?
Bah. Jets should've stuck to their guns and the original 1m + incentives offer. Pennington really had no leverage here.
Actually, it kills our cap. If we make his deal turn into a 1 yr deal.. guess what.. the remaining 12M of his signing bonus comes into 2006, meaning he counts 15M this year. However, he'd be off the books in 2006. No way the Jets do this. They probably give him this year at 3M instead of the 6M+3M he was scheduled.
Chad has no leverage. If he's cut he plays, at best, for veteran minimum next year as a backup with sdomeone else.
