Interesting.....the next few weeks will show what Tanny's made of. Here's the Link: http://www.newsday.com/sports/footb...30297feb17,0,4770484.story?coll=ny-jets-print The ball is now in Tanny's court. This is just the begining...... lets' see if the Jets' make another offer above 1 mill per year. IMO, if Pennington isn't willing to restructure.....he will be cut. Pennington needs to realize if the Jets release him, he's not going to make more on the open market.
It is interesting to hear the sterness of Mawae, saying no, or release me. Thought he might be a little cooler than that.
we need to move on on all these guys its sad to say i like them all but come on. penny was my favorite jet but lets be serious id be shocked if any team signed him. he threw ducks before and now hes had two serious surgeries. mawae fabini and kendall and fiedler law should all say bye bye to much money and they are older guys on their last leg in the nfl let them go give them a pat on the back and keep going young and let sbuild a good team
WOW...I could have a new screen name after all...Pennington is making a BALLSY move here by not taking the cut. If he gets released by the jets he will be a career back up QB. (Probably would be here too but he would at least be given a chance) Very suprising to see Mawae so stingy. He is making 4.5 millions dollars and probably won't be a starter after this season. Why not reduce your salary Mawae? We clearly have some cap issues. Although they aren't nearly as bad as they were now that Law is gone. Where does that put us? 15 million over?
I think the Jets offer was a bit rediculous. I think there will be a meeting at middle ground eventually.
Lets take a look at it from a different angle. He has already made like 18 Million dollars. 18 MILLION F*$kin dollars! For being on IR. According to that article Pennington has missed 22 regular season games in the last THREE SEASONS! That is insane. Not only has he missed games, but he has also suffered SERIOUS injuries to his throwing shoulder which not only has led to average play on the field, but it has probably hurt him mentally. Pennington has ZERO leverage...He has not proven he can stay healthy Sad thing is we don't have any levergae either. I think this is going to lead into one big ugly divorce and we will have to look elsewhere for cap relief.
It could just be him playing hardball,he wouldn't get a great offer on the open market considering his age and the fact he's coming off an injury. He will be trying to keep as much money as possible.
What a joke. To me, this pay-cut was like telling him "your either the Mr. Jet that you claim to be or your not". Obviously, seems like he's not. It isn't as if we are penalizing an already filthy rich man [who's gotten most of this cash while sitting on his ass], we are telling him in order to regain the money that he initially signed for and stay on the roster is put in incentives on his deal. It disgust me, really.
wait a minute - an agent raising a stink about losing 8 million? Never would have dreamed that would happen.
In MLTHO the Jet management screwed the pooch with these over-paid contracts! They gave Pennington a biggie before they knew he was fully "cured". They also gave away the store to Martin and on a smaller scale to Mawae and Fabini. So, if they were that stupid then, the agents think they will continue to be that stupid and they will fight hard for their clients. Afterall, if the agents don't show strength, how many new players will sign with their companies.
I am disappointed in the initial feedback from Pennington and Mawae, but I am also not surprized. I am not saying the original Pennington contract was stupid, but when Herm was here there was a lot of stupid contracts signed to aging vets that clearly extended beyond their useful service. Herm instigated it, Bradway executed it, and Tannebaum helped orchestrate it. This obviously translates into wasted money eventually. I would like to believe that Tannenbaum was just following orders based on his position at the time. I do not envy Mangini's and Tannenbaum's position. A lot of very tough decisions coming up. I can't believe Pennington is behaving like a little spoiled prick over this whole thing, either. I think, as many have said, that there will be a meeting ground somewhere amicable, given all the facts and variables. Truth and Fact: If Chad wants to potentially ever be a starter again, he better stay here. It is unlikely it will happen anywhere else. I agree with a lot of others. He will be a life-time backup. He may never get to play a professional down again. I can't believe he would actually screw a team that gave him $22M for 18 games. I will hold final judgement until I hear quotes directly from him. Mawae: I need to hear direct quotes from him as well. What does he expect. I think he's 35 years old and coming off of an injury. He can still be of value as a center, but you know, he didn't make out that bad financially while a Jet either. I really hope he isn't a pig about this whole thing. I knew these dumbass contracts signed over the last few years were going to eventually take a large chunk out of our behind. This thing could get really, really uuuuuuuggggggggllllllyyyyyy!!!!! I hope the Front Office has learned by this and never allows this to happen again. Yes, you have to pay good personnel, but you also have to cover your ass. I think the true lesson learned is, you can keep people too long. It is unfortunate that many players can not retire playing for one team, but that landscape has changed from the cap and the CBA. I think you will see less and less of it over time.
The old guard of the team has to realize that the new fo will not blindly sstick up for them because they are veterans. We are in a new age here. No more hi $$$$ contracts just because you have a few years under your belt. Prove it and then make it. Seems like the Jets are willing to carry tons of dead $$$$ in order to rebuild the team the way the new regime wants it. Be prepared for quality depth instead of 1/2 the cap room reserved for the offensive backfield.
The lack of guaranteed money in the NFL will lead to a labor strike. Bet on it. Other pro athletes laugh at how this union allows the NFL to operate this way. That said, goodbye Chad.
The Star-Ledger didn't report it this way. The above article impies a flat-out, take-it-or-leave-it rejection on Chad's part. The Ledger mentions that although Chad initially rejected the offer, he is "willing to work with the Jets" (paraphrasing). This is undoubtedly a more accurate description of what's going on. I'll get resolved.
As of right now, hmmmmmmmm. We just have to hang tough for awhile and see how all this stuff plays out.
